We have prices for two versions of our trip, barely a $$ difference, but wanted to know when traveling if it makes a difference on the train?

This depends on where and how long you plan to go.
1st class is only available on long-distance trains. You have a little bit more space, on the OIC or OEC dark wood instead of light-colored wood... and leather seats instead of fabric.
Drinks and snacks will be served to your seat (you have to pay for it).
If money doesn%26#39;t matter, you can also get a 1st class Business compartment (on OEC or OIC trains), which is first class ticket + 15 € per person. There are just 4 seats, very much space and you get a free mineral water or orange juice...
but mind that on trains usually not all seats are taken...so space is available... best might be if you tell us, where you plan to go to!

And for timetables and fares, have a look at:
http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/en
The ticket is %26quot;Standardticket%26quot;...
There is a very small discount on the 2nd and any more passenger (if you travel inside of Austria) which is granted without asking, even at the ticket machines.
Generally: Train travel is very easy! Definately no need to buy in advance. It won%26#39;t save you any money... train tickets are usually valid on all trains for 2 weeks and more...
And if you get 2nd class tickets... you can upgrade to 1st class (but only cash... it%26#39;s just the difference between 1st and 2nd class and must be paid when the conductor comes to check your tickets).

Thank you for your help. We have the option of 1st or 2nd class when traveling from Vienna to Salzburg and then Salzberg to Munich. I%26#39;m guessing it really doesn%26#39;t matter. Is it true with 1st class you have an assigned seat? Thanks again!

You have an assigned seat if you do a seat reservation... (€ 3,50 per person for one journey). In Austria, nobody does a seat reservation, so no need to spend to money on it, except you are a large group and it%26#39;s a must for you to sit together.
Seat reservation in 1st class inside of Austria (Vienna-Salzburg) is for free... but nobody does it...
Fares 2nd class Vienna - Salzburg
1 adult 43,40 €
2 adults 78 €
3 adults 105,10 €
Fares 1st class Vienna - Salzburg
1 adult 72,10 €
2 adults 128,20 €
3 adults 172,50 €
There are no further discounts, it does make it cheaper if you buy in advance. People get their ticket just before they go from the ticket counter, ticket machines, online-printable tickets or on the mobile phone (only for austrian mobile phones available).
For the Salzburg-Munich leg, you can get a %26quot;Bayern-Ticket%26quot; from the DB (Deutsche Bahn, German Railways) counter or ticket machine... then you can use all RE or RB (RegionalExpress or RegionalBahn) trains.
It%26#39;s just 19 € (1 adult, valid for one day for all means of transport in Bavaria, Munich included) or € 27 for up to 5 people. 2 Euros more, if you buy it from the ticket counter. Valid Mon-Fri from 9am to 3 am next day, Sat-Sun from 00 am to 3 am next day.
The RB and RE trains need about 20 mins. longer... ICs, ECs and ICEs are faster, but much more expensive.
All trains are quite comfortable, do have clean toilets, it%26#39;s not Asia or Africa...
Maybe some pictures can help:
Example of a typical austrian long-distance coach, 2nd class, open coach:

The ICE trains look like that:

1st class:

For more information, have a look at:
Austrian Railways ÖBB: www.oebb.at/vip8/pv/en/
German Railways DB: bahn.de/p/…international_guests.shtml
There you can also find the online-timetable! The Austrian has all trains allover Europe and parts of Asia + all means of public transport in Austria
The German one has ... + all means of public transport in Germany.
I would not spend that much money for these short journeys...

One more information: DO NOT buy from companies like raileurope... they charge you much more than the official tariff!
Example 3 adults Vienna-Salzburg, 2nd class:
Austrian Railways ÖBB: 105,10 €
Raileurope: 297 USD = 229,66 € ... more than the double!
Tickets can be bought so easy! Credit Card is accepted anywhere and it%26#39;s not like flying!
