Good morning Vertical - I will be visiting Vienna in mid April and would like to stay up to 5 days..is that enough time to enjoy the must-see delights and sights and can you recommend good priced accommodation for a solo lady on a budget?..many thanks Elly in Oz

One tip from a fellow solo female traveller to Vienna - I would suggest going for a smaller, older hotels or pensions because they usually have genuine single ensuite rooms which will cut your costs considerably - unlike modern hotels which cheat solo travellers by making them pay twice for a double!
The older pensions often have the advantage, too, of being in very central locations - much better than the big, modern, anonymous hotels.
In my various solo trips to Vienna I have stayed at Pension Pertschy and Pension Christina (www.pertschy.com), Pension Nossek (www.pension-nossek.at), the Hotel Post (www.hotel-post-wien.at) and another solo female traveller I know heartily recommends Pension Suzanne (www.pension-suzanne.at) I am going to Vienna in April and will be trying out a new place, Pension Aviano (www.secrethomes.at). I would recommend all of the above as good mid-range hotels in very central locations with genuine single rooms that won%26#39;t break the bank. My no. 1 favourite is Pension Pertschy.
Hope that helps as a start on the accommodation question!

Hello Elly in Oz:
I always recommend at least 3 days in Vienna. 5 days is much better and allows you to not only learn more about the city but to absorb some of its character without stress.
Many rush through the sights as if it some type of contest to see the most things in the shortest possible time. Not much fun in my opinion.
If you could suggest a budget number in euro for accomodation - it would certainly help with recommendations as %26quot; good price accomodations %26quot; or %26quot; budget%26quot; perception vary by each of us.
You can also look to
www.info.wien.at
under hotels insert your dates and price range to see hotels - ask back here about ones that you like.
Certainly, a city center location is very helpful and desirable.
Each place has its plus and minus side.
Example- Pension Nossak- good location on Graben- minus early morning noise from the street with trash trucks daily , delivery trucks also. Not good for those rooms facing this street.
Some hotels are %26quot; Cassic Vienna- some minimalist- some just old and worn. Some others willing to rent rooms by the hour.
Vienna is considered to be a very safe city and many must see sights are within walking distance. Schönbrunn however needs public transport.
For budget considerations- consider a Vienna Card that will provide unlimited public transport and reduced admissions to many places for 3 days at 18,90 euro a bargain.
Information on the Card and other helpful things at
www.info.wien.at
Also look for combination admission tickets such as the %26quot; Sisi Ticket%26quot; admission to Schönbrunn Palace, Hofburg Palace Imperial Apartments and Sisi Museum.
www.hofburg-wien.at
www.schoebrunn.at
Sisi is a name for Empress Elisabeth - wife to Emperor Franz Josef and Mother to the poor Crown Prince Rudolph
Many sights have audio guides , usually about 3 euro each that allow you to tour at your own pace and provide excelent info.
The Fine Arts Museum ( Kunsthistorisches Museum) one of the must sees also has these guides.
www.khm.at
Note this museum like some others has night hours-
The Fine Arts is open Thursdays until 9 PM.
Most tourists do not know this and you have a very nice visit without many people.
Another place often missed is the Imperial Treasury ( Schatzkammer) in an older part of the Hofburg palace- Holds jewels and insignia of the Austrian and Holy Roman Empire.
info also on
www.khm.at
Most all hotels will include breakfast in your room price.
Many local restaurnats will serve a special luncheon - 3 course menu of soup, main course and dessert at an excelent price.
Good food .
an example
Reinthalers Beisl on Dorotheergasse -very near Graben. Go before 12 or after 13:30 to miss the crowd of business people.
Also consider a visit to a Heuriger( wine tavern) much about these elsewhere on Trip Advisor.
Hopefully the sidewalk cafes will be open by your visit- take some time , order a drink and watch the city go by-always interesting.

Vertical -thank you so much for your generous reply to my questions..you%26#39;ve given me a lot of options that I can use to make full use of my time in beautiful Vienna...I will flying into Vienna from Prague (a return visit which I%26#39;m excited to see again)..I will then go on to Budapest/Copenhagen and Oslo (haven%26#39;t yet decided which is the most scenic way to travel)..are there any other side trips I should do because I%26#39;m going to be there?..I%26#39;ll be using a Scandanavian Air pass?..regards Elly in Oz

Hello Vertical again...I%26#39;m budgetting for around 50-75 euro daily..is that a reasonable or unreasonable expectation.?..when I visited Prague last year I managed to see the wonderful city, stay at a good B%26amp;B, use the supermarket for lunches and ate an evening meal at a local eatery al for around 75 euros daily...was I just lucky or do you think that%26#39;s still do-able?..Elly in Oz...
