Visiting Vienna for the time

My wife our six year old daughter and I would be arriving in Vienna on the afternoon of January 2nd 2007. We need recommendations on hotels that are right in the center of the city close to Prater as possible. We have never been to Vienna before so recommendations on sightseeing will be most appreciated.

Since we do not know the city and we would be with a six year old it would be nice to be as near the lively areas as possible. Our preference would be for five star hotels however if nothing is available anything would do.

Do you fly Emirates from Dubai? - They may have some form of package this toime of year.

The Prater is not in the city center. No 5 star hotels near to the Prater.

If you desire this location due to the amusement park for your 6 year child- not worth going . Very little is open now. best ride the giant Ferris Wheel but little more.

Better visit Schönbrunn Palace - then to the large zoo in the park behind the Palace.

Many kids like the apple strudel making in the lower level under the restaurant too.

The most lively area, best shopping, choice of restaurants and many sightseeing opportunities is the First Disrict ( Innenstadt)

5 star hotels- include Bristol, Grand, Sacher , Imperial, LeMeridien among others.

check Trip Advisor Hotel List for more info reviews etc. to see which is best for you. All are well located.

Take a ride on the streetcar # 1 or#2 around the Ringstrasse to see many sights and become familiar with the city- kids usually like the ride too.

Vertical Vienna,

Thanks for your input. Yes we do fly Emirates everywhere however our past experience has shown that the hotels the airline recommends are usually far away from the city center.

So of all the hotels you have suggested which do you think would be the best in terms of central location as with a six year old we would prefer accomodation that has things within walking distance. We are ok even with hotels that are not five star but the location is good. Apprecciate your response early as we have to make hotel reservations by Friday December 29th, 2006.

Hope to hear from you soon.

If you go to the Prater (easy enough by public transport) to go on the Ferris wheel go at dusk, the city (which I rate very highly) loos beuatiful at night.

or even looks beautiful !

Hi HankkDubai,

The 5 stars hotels are listed below.

http://www.botros.at/hotels/vienna5.htm

The recommended hotels are : the most central Hotel Sacher (famous! Staff may be snobbish to some), Hotel Bristol (next to Opera House), Grand Hotel (Neumarkt and inside ringstrasse ) %26amp; Hotel Ambassador (Kartner Strasse, the shopping street).

Hotel Sacher has great history and interior but some people have complained their staff tend to be snobbish in restaurants and bars. Otherwise, stay in one of the few mentioned, they are central.

Out of more than 25 countries I have been in Europe, Vienna ranks number 1 in ease of transportation, cleanliness and safety for a city.

It is also my second favorite city after magical Paris. No where in Europe would you find a more elegant, classy and majestic city than Vienna (pershap except St Petersberg which I%26#39;ve not been). It may be boring for many as there are not many lively night entertainment.

Winter time is not a great time to visit Vienna as most museums and Prater are close early and fountains are sealed off. Prater can be reached by Metro which is about 10-15 mins away from city center.

The city center is encircled by a ring road / ringstrasse (not a highway) which tram no1 %26amp; no 2 go around serving clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. Most of the historical sites (except Schönbrunn Palace ) and 5 stars hotels are either within the city centres or around the ringstrasse. You would hardly find any other historical metropolitan city design in such %26quot;compact%26quot; grandeur.

The tram and metro lines are very well sign posted. The ingenious Metro planner use signs and colors instead of different languages to indicate tram numbers %26amp; stops in all metro exits.
