best area to stay

what area/section of vienna would it be best to look for hotels from the standpoint of easy travel around the city-safety-and closeness of attractions?

read my post in the section %26quot;best hotel for the family of 5%26quot; and it%26#39;s well worth it.

I wouldn%26#39;t particularly like to stay around the Südtirolerplatz. The area is not the best and the Ubahn station there can be a tad creepy. It is also some distance from the central area (the UBahn is good but it%26#39;s nice to be able to walk to most of the places you want to visit, particularly at night, rather than always having to take public transport). If you can afford it (and there are a few bargains to be had, even right in the centre) best to stay in the first district (postcode 1010) where you will be able to walk to most of the major tourist sights within a few minutes, and public transport will take you further afield to places like Schoenbrunn.

If you suggest the price-range of hotel you are looking for, people might be able to make specific recommendations for you.

As Roley notes, perhaps the best area for a first time tourist to stay is the First District - postal code 1010 and inside the Ringstrasse.

Second choice would be hotels just outside but very near to the Ring.

Choose carefully as some hotels advertise city center location but are not really that close - you need to ride public transport some minutes to reach things

Most major tourist sights, museums, shopping within easy walking distance in the First District. Also the city center location offers a huge choice of restaurants in all price categories.

Vienna is considered a very safe city - walking on the street in the evening- example after a concert or Opera is no problem.
