Off the beaten path places...suggestions

My husband and I are going to Austria for two weeks in mid June. We%26#39;ve been to Switzerland for the last two years. We love small villages with good hiking. Don%26#39;t care about nightlife. We are staying 5 days in St Gilgen area south of Salzburg and enjoying the lakes and hikes. We have decided to rent a car this year and would like to spend about 5 days in another area...we are willing to spend nights in different hotels/B%26amp;Bs. We like charming authentic places, good scenery, wine, castles, etc. not 5 star hotels or spas. We will do Vienna on another trip. Thank you for any ideas!

For something completely different - look to a drive east to Passau- then down the Danube River.

Many beautiful small villages- visit the Abbey at Melk- between melk and krems is the area known as the Wachau- wine country castles, excelent scenery- a ride down the Danube by ship is always nice.

The villages of Dürnstein, Spitz, Weissenkirchen etc. have many hotels, Band Bs , even many wineries have guest quarters

An off the path castle with nice rooms for a night Burg Oberranna in Mühldorf near Spitz.
