Hello Vienna Residents/Experts:
I am trying to choose which hotel to stay in for my week%26#39;s visit to Vienna in the beginning of April 2007. The choices are: Hotel Alpha, Falkensteiner Hotel am Schottenfeld, Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier, and Top Hotel Papageno. I have read, of course, all of the reviews and they all seem nice and clean. My interest is in the loicale and location. Which has an area with cafes, shops, ets nearby? Which has a better location? If you had to choose one, whcih would it be and why? Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.

Of these, based on location alone, I would prefer either the Alpha as closest to the centre of town - just behind the Rathaus - or the Papageno, which is also close to the centre and near some useful things eg. Naschmarkt, Theater an der Wien, and some very nice restaurants. The Papageno looks a nicer hotel, from the website.
The Biedermeier location is not bad but a bit shopping-street dreary (fast food chains et al). Both it and the Falkensteiner are probably too far to walk to the centre, if you were inclined to give public transport a miss (I consider anything of 20 mins or more too far, when you are tired out by sightseeing!)
Hope that helps!

I’d pick either Alpha or Papageno.
both just outside the city centre, on the border of residential districts with lots of smaller shops %26amp; restaurants. Alpha might be a little closer to the city center, walking distance to the Imperial buildings on Ring Strasse. Papageno is on a very busy street also with trams. Papageno is also walking distance to Naschmarkt with lots of restaurant around there.
both have an excellent connection to public transportation. Alpha: tram J right around the corner which travels along the Ring to the Opera and also U2 stop around another corner. Papageno: tram 65, 62 and Badner Bahn stop almost in front of the door, all 3 have their last stop across from the Opera.
Falkensteiner in the middle of a residential district. around the corner, on Burggasse, bus 48A which takes you to the Ring Strasse within 5 minutes, at stop Volkstheater you can change to U2 or U3 and several trams. lots of restaurants along Burggasse.
Mercure is close to Wien Mitte which I personally find an extremly ugly spot. U3 an U4 both stop there but it’s also walking distance from Ring Strasse. Landstrasser Hauptstrasse is a shopping street but that’s about it for that location.

Once again I can not thank the TA%26#39;s who responded enough. Makes planning a journey so easy when this type of help is offered. Many thanks again, JOHN

OH MY GOODNESS I CAN%26#39;T BELIEVE I FORGOT A HOTEL.....
In sharing your responses with my friend she mentioned to em that I forgot one of the hotels we are considering - the Small Luxury Hotel das Tyrol. Does that area have more advantages that the Alpha and the Papgeno? Is it closer to everything we would want to see and do in Vienna or the same as Alpha and Papgeno? Once again, Thank you in advance.

Tyrol is located on Mariahilfer Strasse, which is Vienna%26#39;s longest shopping street. there%26#39;s a subway stop very close by (Museumsquartier). walking distance to Ring Strasse about 5 minutes.
also very good location. again walking distance to Naschmarkt and restaurants in that area but also walking distance to Burggasse/Spittelberg area with all the restaurants.

I don%26#39;t know the Tyrol but I would still prefer the Alpha or Papageno locations to the Mariahilferstrasse, which is one of those long, soulless shopping streets with too many places selling pizza by the slice and people lurking about - if you know London, think of the skankier end of Oxford Street (hmm, actually Oxford Street is pretty much skanky along its entire length these days!)
The Tyrol is at the better end of the MHStr (closer to the centre) with a few outposts of civilization near by (eg. branch of Oberlaa opposite the Kunsthistorischesmuseum) and near other areas like Naschmarkt or Spittalberg with restaurants but why walk there when you can stay there? is my motto!
However, to be fair, of the three choices it is marginally closer to town than the other two and it is on the 2A busroute which is very handy - will take you round the KHM, through the Hofburg, to the Graben, St Stephans and down to the Schwedenplatz. But note that the bus only runs till about 18.00, doesn%26#39;t run Sundays and on Saturdays (I think) only goes as far as the Graben. Otherwise you%26#39;re stuck with a longish walk to the U3 (Neubaugasse) - about the same distance as walking to town.
