August - travel with a 14 year old

Hello

I%26#39;m considering a week in August for myself %26amp; my 14 year old daughter. The only city break we%26#39;ve done previously was to Budapest, which she enjoyed. Do you think Salzburg will keep her occupied for a week?

Also, can anyone recommend any reasonable hotels for this time of year?

Thanks

Hi Jenne

I went to Salzburg with my better half just prior to Christmas for the first time.

I really enjoyed the city but it is in comparison to some other destinations a relatively small place. I think if you were there for a week you could use Salzburg as a base to to do excursions to other places, we popped on the train to Berchestgaden for instance.

There is plenty to do and see, the fortress, shopping in the old town etc, all the Mozart bits and bobs.

I would imagine it would be crowded in August but there are more experienced regulars who well be able to advice you on that side of things.

We stayed at the Markus Sittikus which I thought was fine and have posted a review accordingly.

Hope that helps.

Hi Jenne

In August the city will be very busy and lively as it is the festival time. There%26#39;ll be lots of street theatre as well as all the cultural events going on. Salzburg city is quite small and you can see the main attractions in a few days but as Matt says it%26#39;s a great place to stay as a base. You could take a bus trip to the Salzkammergut lake region which only takes an hour or so to get to. There are train trips to various other places such as Hallstatt, Zell am See, Berchtesgaden (accessible by bus too) and even Munich or Innsbruck if you were prepared for a long day out. A cable car ride to the top of the Untersberg, just south of Salzburg, is a fantastic treat. Eisriesenwelt ice caves are spectacular and there are always trips such as the Sound of Music tour and the salt mines. Just a visit to the Fortress in the city can use up half a day so I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;d find yourselves bored at all.

Thanks for your replies - I%26#39;m also considering Vienna as well, as my daughter is horse mad, and would LOVE the Lipizanner school there.
