We are arriving by train and will do day trips by train and bus. Zum Hirschen seems to be located in a good area to catch both the train and bus. Would someone please comment on this hotel and location? Thank you!!!!

I have never stayed there but that part of town is not the best and doesn%26#39;t appeal to me at all. Salzburg is only a small city so a trip to the station from wherever you stay is not long. I would find a hotel closer to the old city or preferably in the old city itself. The area around the station is noisy and not attractive.

We stayed at the Zum Hirschen in September of last year. The hotel was nice and very clean as well as the area surrounding it. It is close to the train station (about an 8-minute walk) but I found the walk to the old town farther than I would have liked. It%26#39;s about a 15-20 minute walk there which in itself is not bad, but once you have spent most of the day walking around, the hike back to the hotel was dreaded.
Oh, btw, the breakfast at the HIrschen was good and plentiful and included eggs and champagne.

LizR,
Where would you recommend staying?

We always stay at a hotel in Aigen which is one of the suburbs so I have no personal experience of the city hotels. But I do know the city extremely well and I know which areas are nice and which are dodgy. A friend of mine has just returned from Salzburg. She stayed at the Hotel Elefant which is right in the centre of the old city. A great location. Other posters should be able to help you better with hotel recommendations.
Regarding the Zum Hirschen have you read the tourist reviews on this site? They might help you come to a decision. Some visitors really liked the hotel but quite a few mention the location is not good.

Though I agree with Liz about the hotel location near the railway station not being the best, I wondered whether you are using Salzburg only as a base for daytrips or are planning to spend time in the city too.
If you are going on trips every day, staying by the station might be handy - and there are good bus links into town if you are prepared to brave the intricacies of public transport. A prior poster mentioned the long walk to town - and it is long, especially after a full day%26#39;s sightseeing - but there are loads of buses that run between the station and the city centre and it%26#39;s possible to buy daily or weekly passes which are good value. So if you%26#39;re keen to stay by the station, you can still have easy access to the town centre.
For a trip which is a mixture of exploring Salzburg city and taking day trips, I would choose a hotel in easy walking distance to the old town, but near a bus stop with a direct bus to the rail station. In the heart of the old town, you might try the Hotel Elefant, Hotel am Dom, or the Goldene Ente. Alternately, there are some hotels on the new-town side of the river which are walking distance to the old town but close to bus routes - I like Hotel Gablerbrau and others in that general area include the Austrotel near the Mirabell gardens, the Sheraton, or the Stieglbrau.
I hope that gives you some more to go on. If you want more information about the bus routes, let us know - there are some Salzburg bus experts posting here!

We stayed at the Zum Hirschen in november and are returning in Feb. the facilities at the hotel are great; the top floor has six types of sauna/steam room, jacuzzi%26#39;s and a well equiped gym if you%26#39;re into that. We found it set us up nicely for an evening out.
Oddly enough, though they don%26#39;t advertise it, all of the food is organic. Although it is relatively near the station we didn%26#39;t experience any noise from it. The hotel is within easy walking distance from the old town - about 10mins. It costs about 10 euros from the airport to the hotel.
If you want a kettle in your room you need to ask for it at reception, its free, you can also hire some bath robes for 4 euros for your duration. .
The rooms were very comfortable, nice bathrooms and also come with a free digital safe.
The staff were friendly and informative.
