Hi we are intending to visit Salzburg in Aug with our 2 children aged 9 and 11. We will be flying to Munich and then moving onto Salzburg for 3 or 4 days before returning to Muncih. My question is do we need to hire a car, I am quite happy to use public transport but I would like to children to see the fabulous scenery. Maybe if we hired a car for a day somebody could recommend a day trip that would give a good taste of the surrounding countryside. Would this be a good option?

I%26#39;m curious, considering the dirt-cheap flights from the UK to Salzburg, why you%26#39;re flying into Munich instead (but I guess that%26#39;s none of my business :-)
A car will certainly give you the freedom to explore the mountain scenery. A little way south of Salzburg you can drive up the Rossfeld Strasse - a road that circumnavigates a mountain and affords the most wonderful 360 degree views at the top. You could also go down the Salzach valley to Eisriesenwelt, the magnificent ice caves. The Salzkammergut region is within 30 minutes drive where the lake and mountain scenery is also breathtaking. If you%26#39;re only going to hire a car for a day then the Salzkammergut would be a good trip.

Hi - thanks for your reply - yes I would like to fly direct to Salzburg but wasnt able to find anything that was affordable, can you recommend an airline/website. I can fly from Heathrow to Salzburg for £400 but wasnt able to find anything under £900 to Salzburg (for the 4 of Us)

Oh Lordy!!! We flew to Salzburg last month from London Stansted for 1p each way (+ taxes). Go to www.ryanair.com
They%26#39;re advertising 1p flights to Salzburg at the moment. My friend flew from Coventry today for £4.95p. Check out Ryanair%26#39;s website and also Thomsonfly. I can%26#39;t bear to think of someone paying hundreds of pounds. It%26#39;s because of the incredibly cheap flights that we%26#39;re able to go to Salzburg several times a year. I%26#39;m certain you%26#39;ll find what you want, especially as you%26#39;re planning so far ahead.

I%26#39;ve just picked a flight from Thomson via travelsupermarket.com. Manchester-Salzburg rtn for £96 in April - they are flying on the days I want. Ryanair from LPL could not help. Why not search on travelsupermarket.com?

Try www.skyscanner.com.
I booked Thomsonfly - Manchester to Salzburg for May - 1.36 GBP per person. Total with taxes and credit card fee for two was 50.00 GBP.

Aaargh!
I checked skyscanner.com and my flights are advertised today at a total of £110. I could weep. My total was £173! and no cancellation. :-(

Don%26#39;t weep - you%26#39;ll know better next time.
I find the London Trip Advisor forum is very active with a wealth of information.

@classic53 -
Popping over to the London trip advisor forum now!

we were looking to do nearly the same drive.
How long of a drive is it from Munich to Salzburg and then to Fussen?
The ryanair flights to salzburg right now are 30 pounds. Very tempting! but how long of a connection is it from Heathrow to Sanstead?
