Concerts bad reviews

HELP! I%26#39;ve just been looking at websites with bad reviews about the typical concerts available in SALZBURG. I%26#39;m going to be there Feb 27 and 28 and am wanting to go see some great classical music (not necessarily Mozart) or something different, but not a rip off. At this time of year, there doesn%26#39;t seem to be much on.

I hope there is someone out there who can find me something great to see or experience.

|||

Let me just add, these reviews were from other websites. I%26#39;ve just trawled through comments on the forum here and people are saying that while touristy, they%26#39;re still a good experience. I guess from a musical perspective - are the players good? Are there any other concerts or piano recitals on offer anywhere else in Salzburg? Universities?

I went to a Strauss concert in Vienna a few years ago and the musicians were only just OK, but the experience itself was delightful. I%26#39;m not necessarily after a %26quot;Mozart experience%26quot;, but a good night out at a concert. Or should I be considering the Mozart experience since I%26quot;m in Salzburg.

The Salzburg tourist information website has an events database which I find invaluable when ferreting out concerts and other musical events: see here

www2.salzburg.info/veranstaltungen_262.htm

I had a nose on those dates and I thought these two things didn%26#39;t look bad:

%26quot;Young Artists%26quot; Konzert, Mozarteum 27.02.07 19.30

Konzert Widmann

Dienstag, 27.02.2007, 19:30, Wiener Saal

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Sonate für Klavier und Violine Es-Dur KV 302

Ludwig van Beethoven

Sonate für Klavier und Violine G-Dur op. 96

Luciano Berio

Sequenza VIII für Violine solo

Richard Strauss

Sonate Es-Dur für Violine und Klavier op. 18

The Mozarteum is Salzburg%26#39;s major music school so I would expect the standard to be pretty good.

You can order tix here:

Hi rol,

That is all very helpful. As my German is not so good, one of the links doesn%26#39;t translate to English very well. I think I%26#39;ve worked it out though.

Do you know if I can order tickets at the door, on the day, or should I pre book them on line? I%26#39;m interested in the ones at the Mozarteum and Kulturvereinigung (this website is harder to translate)

The Mozarteum Salzburg, Schwarzstrasse 26 and Kulturvereinigung Waagplatz 1a,- are these located in the old or new part of town? We%26#39;ll have a car, but are preferring to walk around while in Salzburg, or should we take public transport?

|||

I am not sure about the prebooking - it might be worth firing off an email in English to both sites and to see if you can get some info from them that way! Sometimes I send orders by fax for these sorts of things, when the websites are beyond me, and arrange to collect the tix when I arrive or from the evening box office.

I suspect that the Kulturvereinung one will sell out because it is actually in the Grosses Festspielhaus - the festival hall, in the old town. The Mozarteum is close to the old town, over the river not far from the Sacher hotel so if you%26#39;re staying the centre you should be able to walk to both (unless it is blizzarding!)

Hello,

We have just returned from Salzburg. I would STRONGLY recommend you NOT go to the Salzburger concerts at Mirabell Palace. We heard an extremely sloppy concert of a Mozart double-quartet, Spohr double-quartet, and the Mendelssohn octet. The quality was really shockingly bad. I doubt the musicians truly rehearsed, perhaps they merely ran through the pieces once. I myself am a musician and have heard better performances from my high school days!

In any case, Salzburg is very walkable, and pleasantly so. You would do better to walk or take the bus than drive. We were there for 2 days and bought the Salzburg card, which allowed us entry into all the major sights and free use of public transportation. The cost was aobut 30 euros per person, I think, for 48 hrs and we saw exhibits worth 50 euros of admission price, plus free use of the bus.

The Kulturvereinigung is actually Saltzburg%26#39;s Cultural Association. The orchestra concert on Feb 28 looks like a fabulous program (Mozart symphony, Berg violin concerto, Beethoven%26#39;s 5th!) I%26#39;m not familiar with the orchestra or the soloist; both the conductor and soloist have Juilliard pedigree though that does not always guarantee quality. Importantly, the concert is in the Great Festival Hall (Großes Festspielhaus), a very beautiful venue where many events of the famous Salzburg Festival take place each summer. We took the guided tour, conducted in German and English, which was great (free with the Salzburg card). Apparently some will pay hundreds of thousands of euros for opera tkts during the festival! On the basis of the venue alone, I would recommend going to the concert. Plus, nothing could be worse than the Mirabell Palace concerts!

The other sites we particularly enjoyed were Mozart%26#39;s house, the Residenz, and the fortress.

Thank you roley and twilight74!

I%26#39;ve just emailed the two locations and am now waiting for responses. We actually leave Salzburg on the 28th Feb, but am now trying to work out how I can avoid doing this and go to the concert in the festival hall. Will need to tweak the itinerary.

Twilight74 thanks so much for confirming my doubts. I%26#39;m a piano teacher from Australia and really want to enjoy a beautiful musical concert, not some touristy dress up experience.

I did not think that for the 1 and a half days (full days mind you) we%26#39;re in Salzburg it would be worth the Salzburg Card.

Mozart%26#39;s house, the Residenz, the fortress and a tour of the Festival Hall (if we can%26#39;t get to the concert), is this a realistic amount to jam into our time? Mostly we like to sit and people watch, see amazing architecture, as well as the highlights of towns/cities. If we are too ambitious in our thinking, would either of you think that seeing both Mozart houses worthwhile? Again, I%26#39;m not sure if it%26#39;s touristy to the point of not being informative or have the Wow factor. Also, how long did the tour take of the Festival Hall?

As an aside, while I enjoyed the Sound of Music, being in Salzburg will keep me satisfied - I do not need to see bits of the movie in real life. Give me Mozart any day.

Thanks for invaluable help.

I don%26#39;t think it is too much. I too like to wander about a city , but Salzburg is so small that I would have gotten a bit antsy. The Residenz is massive and beautifully decorated, good for gawking at the luxurious lifestyle of the old archbishops, if you%26#39;re into that sort of thing. The fortress I thought was good for great panomaric views of the city, though you can also get these by hiking the stairs to the Capuchin monastery. Our visit coincided with the Sunday morning ringing of the bells from each and every church in town, quite an experience!

The top floor of Mozart%26#39;s birthhouse is basically several knick-knacks strewn about which is apparently some artist%26#39;s %26quot;interpretation%26quot; of his life. Very odd concept indeed. The other floors were a bit more informative, though more general - descriptions/exhibits of what life was like then. Probably not worth it.

The house where he grew up was better organized and had an English audio tour. I enjoyed learning about the origin of various pieces written for his patrons (eg, the Lodron piano concerto). The audio tour does a decent, though by no means extensive, job of this. However since you are a piano teacher you may already know these things. If you are interested in any Mozart scholarship, the house has an AV library, also check out this link for other resources: mozarteum.at/03_Wissenschaft/…

The Festival Halls tour is daily at 2 pm, I think it%26#39;s 5 euros. It took about 1.5 hours although he spoke for 75% of the time in German, followed by an obviously abbreviated English translation!

|||

Thanks so much for your help. I%26#39;m so looking forward to our time in Salzburg, particularly now with this added info! Much appreciated.

We have just come back from Salzburg and went to see the same concert at the Mirabel Palace and thought it was wonderful. We are not musicians ourselves but do like going to concerts and operas and enjoyed this very much because it was small and we were able to see the musicians playing with enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment. We thought the music was lovely. On the other hand the Mozart Dinner Concert is not somewhere to go if you want to hear good music or eat good food - but for a night out it was OK.

We did a walking tour of old Salzburg with kultur-tourismus.com

and saw most of the sights and the architecture of the different buildings and churches - it was nice not to have to talk about the Sound of Music! I agree Mozart%26#39;s birthplace is not worth going to.

Enjoy your visit it is a beautiful city.
