Weekend in Salzbyrg

Hi All

Any advice on the NH Salzburg Hotel, regarding location to centre or is it walking distance to the old town and the sights. I am gettin a very good deal on this hotel which includes breakfast but am a bit reluctant to book incase the location is not great or safe. Also getting from the airport to the hotel it is probably wise to take a taxi.

Thanks for any info

I%26#39;ve just been reading the reviews on this site for the NH Salzburg and they seem quite mixed. Some reviewers felt it was in something of a time-warp. Franz-Josef Strasse is about a ten minute walk from the old city and the area is perfectly safe, just not as attractive as the area closer to the river and the old city. I suppose if you%26#39;re only there for a weekend, and presumably won%26#39;t be spending hours sitting in the hotel, you would not be so concerned with decor, etc.

Forgot to say it%26#39;s easiest to take a taxi. I think one reviewer said it cost around 15 Euro from the airport.

Hi LizR,

Thank you so much for the info. 10 mins does not seem too far from the old town and as both of us like walking it should be ok. Regarding places to visit, I was thinking the fortress, the untersberg cable car and saltmines, as far as i gather from the salzburg website the ice caves will not be open when we visit 2-6th Feb which is a shame. Is there any trip worth taking by coach/train that would take you out of the city for the day to experience some of the countryside, I would love to see some of the little snowy villages and maybe even have a go on a sleigh.

Thanks again

We did a day trip from Salzburg to Zell am See. It takes about two hours on the train and you go through some wonderful scenery. Zell is close to the very high mountains in Austria, as well as having a beautiful lake. I don%26#39;t know what Zell is like in the winter because we went in September but there should be snow there. You can go into the Salzkammergut lake district quite easily from Salzburg, on the bus. There%26#39;s lots of mountain scenery out that way too. You could go to St Gilgen and perhaps get the boat down to St Wolfgang and back. Again I%26#39;ve only visited these places in summer so I hope others can advise on winter conditions and whether the boats run, etc.

I think the organised sleigh rides are a distance from Salzburg and involve a long trip on a coach first. There are some posts about sleigh rides here on the forum if you search back to messages posted before Christmas.

The fortress is well worth the trip up and the views from the Untersberg are fantastic. I haven%26#39;t done the saltmines trip as I prefer to be above ground :-) but those who%26#39;ve been seem to love them. You can go to the one at Berchtesgaden which again involves lovely scenery on the way. I hope some of this is helpful.

Thanks LizR,

You information is very helpful indeed, I have looked back at some of the other posts and read about the sleigh rides, and you would probably need to be located in one of the ski villages. Anyway I think we will take a day trip or two possible to St Gilgen and Zell because it would be a shame to miss the wonderful scenery that Austria is famous for. We want to experience as much as we can in the few days, city sites and also the sourrounding countryside as its our first time to Austria but I have a feeling it wont be our last.

Thanks again

We were just there for Christmas and 2 girls in our guest house took the sleigh ride on Christmas day. They loved it. The tourist information office has info on it and you can email them. They were not sure of the exact places they were with the exception of Ramsau. I%26#39;m only familiar with Ramsau, Germany so don%26#39;t know this location - maybe someone else does - but they said there was a lot of snow.

We also went by train to Zell am See and there was snow and we took the cable car up the mounttain and had lunch there. The scenery and the lake are beautiful.

%26lt;Hallo, could you tell me the cost of the train and aslo how long the journey took??

The cost of a round trip ticket to Zell am See was 32 euro round trip and it was an hour and 40 minute ride. Very pretty ride.

The NH Salzburg was one of the Hotels we considered but in the end we went for the Cordial Theater - I can%26#39;t quite remember what %26quot;put us off%26quot; the NH but from the outside it looked OK and quite smart - we also had a quick look in the main lobby/reception when we walked past. Clean and modern and quite %26quot;contemporary%26quot; in appearance. I’m not sure if since any reviews of it being in a “time warp” it has had a makeover. Can’t comment on rooms and/or food.

Whilst not actually in the old town it is about a 10/15 min steady walk and after an evening meal in town a pleasant and safe walk back up Linzer Gasse (the Hotel is just left around the corner at the end of the pedestrian section) – just what is needed sometimes ! The Bus #4 from town also goes past the front door with the Hofwirt stop almost outside.

To get there from the Airport you can easily catch the #2 bus now – get off at the Stelzhamerstasse stop, walk a short distance back down Stelzhamerstasse take a left and the Hotel is on the opposite side of the road (Franz Josef Strasse) a little further up. If your thinking of doing the Castle, Untersburg and any sites that benefit from the Salzburg Card get it at the airport and then you can make free use of the bus. Save the Taxi fare for that something little extra :-)

If you like a Weiss Beer (Wheat Beer) then there are two very good Wessbier Breweries in this neck of the woods and worth a call.

De Weisse is on Rupertgasse between Bayerhamstrasse and Virgilgasse and does some very nice beers – some seasonal along with the regular beer. It also offers an extensive menu, can get busy though. As an alternative and a little smaller the s’Kloane Brauhaus is on Schallmooser Hauptstrasse. It brews two Weiss beers, again does food but from a buffet style bar. It is about 50 yards or so past the Cordial Theater Hotel going out of town just before Arnogasse

Thanks so much everyone for all the info.

I just have another question, Does the Salzburg Card cover the journey to St Gilgen
