Hotel in Vienna

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Atlantis in Vienna? We have stayed at the Prinz Eugen and enjoyed it. There is a good package with the Atlantis for 3 nights.

|||

This is tripadvisor, which also contains information about different kinds of accomodation.

tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g190454-d231980…

|||

What is your package at the Atlantis and with whom can you book it. I am looking for a 3 night stay in Vienna and would love to hear all suggestion. I just want a nice hotel in a good location without spending an arm and a leg.

|||

Package through Austrian Airlines. Try the Hotel Prinz Eugen, we have stayed there and enjoyed it. Decent rooms, good location and good rates.

sleigh tours

We are looking to book a sleigh ride with a tour operator and we have found Panorama tours based in salzburg. This horse drawn sleigh ride sounds good but has anyone booked this to recommend or can anyone advise us on other alternatives.

We will be staying at St wolfgang and dont know how far it would be to this tour?

Paul

|||

Why go elsewhere ? - St. Wolfgang has sleigh rides. Ask at your hotel or the tourist office. prbably much less expensive too.

Chriskindlmarkt in December?

My girls and I would like to go to Munich, Interlaken and Salzburg around Chrstmas time 2007. We have been to France, Britain and Italy in the summer. But now we would like to experience skiing and the Jungfrau in Interlaken and the many activities in Munich. But our main reason for going Christmas time is we have heard how beautiful Christmas markets in Austria are. We love Christmas and all the ornaments and things we have heard these markets have. Does anyone know specifically when these markets, particularly the one in Salzburg (Chriskindlmarkt) begin ?Do they run the whole month of December, or just Christmas week? It would be important to know this before booking our trip so we don%26#39;t miss it.

|||

If you have a search in the Salzburg forum under %26quot;Christmas markets%26quot; you%26#39;ll find loads of information about this year%26#39;s market. I don%26#39;t imagine the exact dates for 2007 are available yet, but generally the Salzburg markets open around the second-to-last week in November and run up to Christmas eve. Smaller markets dotted about the town (for example the one up in the Fortress) may open later, but I would expect most everything to be open by the beginning of December.

The Salzburg market is more traditional than the ones in Vienna, but quite small so you can do the main market easily in a day and maybe some of the smaller ones too.

It%26#39;s fun to be in Austria for St Nicholas day (6 December? I may be a day or so out) because that has many traditions associated with it including the Krampus run.

Tabor or ?...

Servus Vertical,

I wrote before about an appartment I found to stay in Vienna but guess I was not so keen and took me time to book so I lost it but I found two other places but I am not sure which one is better. Pricewise they are more or less the same.

First is Tabor Hotel. The second place is an appartment again and the address is Grosse Mohrengasse 29 in 2nd district.

I will be thankful if you can help asap.

Thank you very mucch! :)

|||

I stayed at the Hotel Tabor some years ago (that was my first trip to Vienna!) I don%26#39;t much like the 2nd district which is a bit dull and in some spots a bit rough round the edges, so I wouldn%26#39;t choose to stay there again, but the hotel itself was nice, with a very big room and good breakfasts. It%26#39;s not bad as a base; you have to walk a little way to reach an Ubahn station (U1 Nestroyplatz, and also Tram 21 will take you to Schwedenplatz with good transport connections to the whole city) but as long as you take the public transport, it will be quite convenient. (look elsewhere in this forum for info on the public transport tickets and passes, which are good value).

I don%26#39;t know the other apartment, and I%26#39;m not sure exactly where that%26#39;s located but you could try looking up the phonebook for the exact location - see www.herold.at

rol

|||

Merhaba purplelulu:

Both places you mention are in the same general area. Taborstrasse and Mohrengasse run in the same direction in the city 2nd district between the Danube canal and the Prater.

Taborstrasse is convenient to the city center by streetcar 21 or probably N in that area.

Mohrengasse is closer to Praterstrasse and the U-bahn.

I do not know the apartments but the area has many older apartment buildings- some in not such good repair.

Especially along Taborstrasse , you will find many business places operated by Turkish people.

My best guess is that the hotel would be a better choice.

|||

Dear Roley,

Thank you very much for your reply. I was worried about the hotel and now I feel much better, thank you! :)

The site is also very helpful.

Thanks loads!

|||

Servus Vertical,

I guess I am way insistant and will keep checking hotels till I make it there. :) Thanks for all the info which is really helpful.

I will keep my hotel reservation. :) but not happy about the business places operated by Turkish. :) When I go abroad I try to keep away as much as possible from Turkish people. :)

Thanks a billion. :)

Suggestions please..

OK as mentioned elsewhere my fiancee and I arrive in Salzburg on Monday morning and stay until our flight late on Wednesday night.

We%26#39;re going to sample the Christmas Market but I was wondering if anyone could help with an excursion suggestion?

My fiancee has never really been into the mountains and I%26#39;d like her to see somewhere with a knockout %26#39;Wow%26#39; factor.

Can you suggest anywhere which is within travelling distance of Salzburg? I was wondering about Hallstatt or Berchesgarten?

Any tips or suggestions would be great :0)

Cheers

Matt

|||

On my husband%26#39;s first trip to Salzburg we took a day excursion on the train to Zell am See. He was saying %26quot;wow%26quot; all day long. But in the mountains you need it to be good weather to see the views, so you%26#39;d have to perhaps wait until the day before you decided. The train was so easy. We didn%26#39;t book seats, just turned up on the day. The train goes south, through the Salzach gap, past the fortress at Werfen and the mountain views are wonderful. You%26#39;re looking at the higher mountains once you%26#39;re down there.

At Zell you can take a trip on the lake or enjoy scenery. There are loads of restaurants and shops there too. If the Schmittenhohe cable car is open the views from the top are staggering. You can see about fifteen mountain peaks. A 360 degree panorama.

Another trip, shorter and not quite so spectacular, would be into the Salzkammergut region to St Gilgen or St Wolfgang. I think these are do-able on the bus.

Hallstatt is a long day out and if the weather is cloudy you won%26#39;t see the incredible views.

Berchtesgaden is only a short trip but is wonderful, again if the weather is clear. Shops and restaurants and a picturesque medieval town.

|||

Thanks Liz that%26#39;s great. I%26#39;ve had a look at your posts and you%26#39;re obviously knowledgable about Salzburg so I hope you don%26#39;t mind me pestering you!

We land at Salzburg at 0930 on Monday and leave late on Wednesday night. We%26#39;re visiting primarily for the Christmas Market as I said and we%26#39;ll be doing the usual touristy things I should think but I was wondering about doing the excursion maybe on the last day (Wednesday).

How long would it take to get to Zell Am See on the train?

As someone who has never been before which would you recommend, Hallstatt, Berchesgarten or Zell Am See? We%26#39;d be relying on public transport I think. I had looked at some of the tour companies but I%26#39;m not a big fan of being herded around like cattle so was hoping to do it under our own steam. Do you know how long it would take to get to the respective locations?

I should say I%26#39;m normally much more organised but have been flat out at work so haven%26#39;t had chance :0(

Thanks in advance

Matt

|||

It would take approx one hour and forty minutes to get to Zell am See by train

|||

Dear Matt

Thank you for your kind comments and you can pester all you like.

All three of the trips you mention would yield spectacular scenery if the weather is clear. As it%26#39;s your last day I wonder if it might be too exhausting to do the longer trips (Hallstatt or Zell). I don%26#39;t know the journey from Salzburg to Hallstatt other than by hire car so I can%26#39;t comment on how long it would take to get there on public transport. It was a long journey by car and when we got there the clouds had descended and we saw nothing of the mountains. The village is medieval and beautiful but it wasn%26#39;t our most enjoyable day out. Obviously others who went on clear days have different memories.

Personally we didn%26#39;t find the train journey to Zell too long (the previous poster is correct on the time) because there was so much to see on the way. We were constantly photographing out of the train window. We went quite early in the morning (8.30 ish) and returned early evening. If you have a plane to catch it might make the day a bit tight, timewise.

Berchtesgaden is by far the easier option with excellent scenery. Again we%26#39;ve only been there in the car which took us about thirty minutes. I guess it would be longer by bus. The Watzmann mountain, which sits behind Berchtesgaden is spectacular, being a jagged ridge of peaks. If you google it you%26#39;ll see some photos.

I feel that Berchtesgaden might be your best bet as it%26#39;s your last day. You can get there under your own steam and perhaps another poster might be able to help with bus details. You could perhaps pull in an additional trip down to Konigsee, the lake that sits south of Berchtesgaden. That is beautiful too. If you%26#39;d like to see some photos email me at liz.ringrose@talk21.com.

Regards,

Liz.

This resort is visited by many from England, especially beginner skiers.

I believe they have a town indoor pool and a tobaggan run also. Numerous walking trails.

The town is located at a lower altitude and should not be too cold. Probably about freezing . Of course colder at night.

Also bring a good hat to cover head and ears, gloves also.

Many restaurants of all types - more than 30-40 ? all types of food and prices. You should have little trouble finding something at your price.

Most will have a menu posted outside to show food and prices.

Check with your hosts at the B/B for recommendations.

Drinks at the bars can become expensive - usually much nightlife , but you go early in the season.

Side trips available to Innsbruck, Kufstein, even Salzburg.

taxi from salzberg airport

Paul %26amp; Amanda

No idea, I%26#39;m afraid, but it might be worth emailing your hotel in St Wolfgang and asking them for recommendations and information about the price of a taxi transfer. They might offer to come get you themselves at a discount rate!

Dear Voldemesaa

Welcome to the Salzburg forum. The route from Munich to Salzburg is a fast, safe and straightforward autobahn (motorway). It should take less than two hours and is about 200km. Other posters will know the route better than I do and should be able to give you more information. Have a good trip.

|||

I am surprised altimiro did not mention land mines too.

In normal traffic driving time is probably 2- 2 1/2 hours.

However, this route is a major way to the ski resorts of Austria.

Saturdays and Sundays find very much traffic and frequent and long stalls.

If possible travel on days other than the weekend.

|||

Sorry I should have asked my question simply and in more details. I always think as if everyone has the same intelligence.

Thank you very much informing about conditions I was nut sure about renting a car since the roads maybe dangerous due to ice. Someday if you decide to visit Turkey, I am here for suggestions always...

Christmas weather

Has anyone found information about weather forecasts for the days leading up to Christmas? We will be in Salzburg from December 22 to 26. We are so hoping for snow during that time.

|||

It is unseasonally warm in Salzburg at the moment. We are going next week and had expected to see snow. So it%26#39;s anyone%26#39;s guess, I%26#39;m afraid.

|||

Liz - have a wonderful time at the markets. We are going the 20th. I looked at the webcam of the Residenzplatz today and it is quite busy.

|||

Hi Thelrose,

Thanks! Hope you have a great time too. The markets are heaving this afternoon if the Residenzplatz cam is anything to go by. Friday was the warmest December day in Salzburg since the Second World War!!! The Foehn winds are responsible, according to Salzburger Nachrichten (newspaper). Sales of Gluhwein are not going well :-) Two years ago we were there at this time. It was minus eight some of the time and the Gluhwein was flowing like crazy. The trees were white with frost even though there was no snow in the city. This weather is very frustrating. It seems as though we can%26#39;t predict it at all. You are more likely to get the snow than we are, I suspect :-)

Liz.

|||

Ooops! Sorry Thelrose, I repeated your comment about Residenzplatz being busy. I%26#39;ll blame hours of Christmas shopping and very little food!!!!

|||

No problem - LOL. I know we will be having some Gluhwein just to just to experience the mood. I check the weather each morning and see it is even supposed to be warmer this week. It%26#39;s a shame but we are going to make the best of it as I%26#39;m sure you will too.

confused about "aussenzonen" (outer zone"

Please be kind to clarify the following, cause I think I%26#39;m kind confused!

If I have the Vienna Card and want to transfer with the City Airport Train to Vienna%26#39;s Center, Hoffburg, will I pay a 7,50 ticket or just the fee of 2 euro for the outer zone %26quot;aussenzonen%26quot; ?

What if I want to go to Prater or to Schonbrunn having the Vienna Card. What should I pay ?

I%26#39;m definately confused!

|||

I don%26#39;t know if you get a discount when buying a CAT ticket if you have the Vienna card, but the Vienna card is not valid itself for travel on the CAT train. You have to buy a separate CAT ticket (9 euros one way). The CAT train is a private company, not part of the Vienna transport network which is covered by the Vienna card.

The Vienna Card is only valid for (part of ) the journey on the Schnellbahn S7 from the airport to Wien Mitte (same journey as the CAT, takes about 10 mins more) If you have a Vienna card and want to take the S7 train to town, you will need to pay for another one-zone ticket as the airport-to-town journey is two zones. That will mean buying another 1.50 euro ticket from the machine on the platform ...

Your Vienna card is valid for travel within zone 100 of the city. Zone 100 covers practically everything EXCEPT the airport, so it will cover your journey to the Prater, Schoenbrunn etc.

Hope that helps!

Rol

|||

Outer zones are only important if taking a vehicle belonging to public transport. When opting for a private company like CAT, the rules of Greater Vienna PT are not in effect. If you would take the ordinary train line S7, you could save 1.50€ out of 3€, which would be covered by the pass.

The Vienna Card allows you unlimited rides within the city border.

|||

We visited Vienna over the last weekend and bought our Vienna Cards from the tourist information desk at the airport (it is located by the luggage claim - very easy to find). The desk also sells the %26quot;top up%26quot; tickets needed for the train into Vienna. The S7 line was very easy to catch and from what I have read only 10 minutes longer than the CAT train. On the way back to the airport we bought single trip tickets from the train station - just push the english button and follow the directions - all very simple.

Also - make sure you validate your tickets in the machines before your first trip.

Any recommendations ? We have a 3 year old son and would like to book a skiing holiday , we are looking for accomodation and a resort specifically for him . we would like him to have lessons , but would also want to feel happy leaving him whilst we go off and have some time skiing . all suggestions , any resort would be appreciated , thanks.

How about one of the quieter resorts, the Hochkoenig Winter Kingdom in the Ski Amade area ? I think there may be an English family with accommodation in the area.

D

|||

At 3 he probably won%26#39;t want toski all day, so look for somewhere with an indoor nursery with half day ski lessons available. From when our children were small I seem to remember that the French resorts were better equipped for small children than the Austrian ones, but things may have changed.

Friends with a 4 year old always go with Ski Espirit

St Wolfgang ferry schedule?

We are considering staying in St Gilgen this summer as a base for a hiking week. I have been able to check train and bus schedules in the area, but wonder about the water ferries. If we were to plan a dinner or two in St Wolfgang, what time does the last ferry run? (We almost got stuck in Switzerland one year because the ferry stopped at 630!!) I%26#39;m really trying to plan this trip without renting a car. Thanks for any transportation advice!

|||

This website has the ferry schedules for next summer:

www.schafbergbahn.at/media/fahrplan2007.html

As you%26#39;ll see, the ferries don%26#39;t run specially late on the Wolfgangsee either! You may find it possible to use the bus to get between St Wolfgang and St Gilgen (changing at Strobl) but even that%26#39;s likely only to be a bit after 8pm. Maybe lunch in St Wolfgang instead?

I had a holiday last summer based in Bad Ischl and I found the public transport excellent for getting to Salzburg, St Wolfgang, St Gilgen, and Hallstatt (and if I%26#39;d had time I could have gone to Traunsee too). Bad Ischl is nice for a visit during July-August because the Lehár festival is on then and you can spend your evenings hearing an operetta or two!

I%26#39;m planning to go back this year and stay a few days each in Bad Ischl, St Wolfgang, and Salzburg.

Help needed to plan summer trip

Hello all - we are coming to St Johann in June and want to travel the area by train including Milan or Venice or Paris and everything in between. From experience, things don%26#39;t look as far away on the map so we need help from those who have been there before us. 1 is a seasonsed traveler and 1 is not but both full of energy...what should we do, how can we plan our trip, what%26#39;s there, what%26#39;s a waste and what isn%26#39;t, what%26#39;s some of %26quot;off the beaten path%26quot; kinda stuff?

Thanks

|||

Well to start you could go onto the Austrian trains website http://www.oebb.at and have a look at the destinations or you could go onto google images and have a look at an Austrian trains map or Europe trains map

Venice is not too far from Innsbruck maybe 5 hours if I remember correctly (its been a while since I did the trip!) The trains are great and there is a train to Milan from Venice that takes about four hours I think.

Takes a little longer to get to paris (we didnt go that far) and I think you have one or 2 changes on the trains and I think it takes 11 hours from Innsbruck.

Its definatly worth visiting a few small Austrian mountains villages aswell

Hope this helps a little

|||

Thanks for the input - saw something in Rick Steves over the weekend and he also mentioned Bellagio, Lake Cuomo, Veranno, etc - any suggestions?

Non-meat restaurants (seafood ok) and visit to Mayerling

Hello...my husband and I do not eat meat (surprise since I am 50% Austrian and 50% German! I must try wiener schnitzel in honor of my heritage). We do eat fish and seafood. I have read about a few places that serve fish or seafood (Dalmatia; Le Salzgreis) on this site, but does anyone have any additional suggestions? My husband loves Italian as well.

Also, a friend suggested we visit Mayerling. We already have quite a bit to do in our 5 days there (December 21-26), so not sure it is worth the time for our first visit to Vienna. Any thoughts?

Many thanks!

Pamela

|||

I would not visit Mayerling- a relatively time consuming trip.

The original hunting lodge was destroyed many years ago.

Your time is better spent in the city in my opinion.

For Italian food

Martinelli is very nice - the parent firm has several italian restaurants in Vienna

www.barbaro.at

Grotto Azzurrra a long time fixture for italian food

www.grotto-azzurra.at

Kervansaray - not far from Imperial Hotel is good for seafood- expensive.

Do and Co at Stephansplatz-- nice view good fish

www.doco.com

Akakiko - a chain of fish places - always seem busy but not for me.

The others above- I have visited often and find a good standard.

|||

Vertical, many thanks for your wonderful non-meat, italian and fish restaurants in Vienna! Now I don%26#39;t need to worry about my husband starving while I indulge in the delicious pastries (he%26#39;s a health nut and doesn%26#39;t eat sugar...such a shame!, although he has been known to enjoy a good hot chocolate in Belgium, so I%26#39;m sure he will enjoy that while in Vienna). I do recall having read about Do %26amp; Co....I really appreciate your expert suggestions. My husband is finalizing the flight arrangements as we speak, then I can contact the concierge for securing tickets, then we will be all set to go!

Cheers,

Pamela

I forgot to mention that Do and Co. principal is the son of the founders of the Kervansaray.

Do and Co. well regarded for quality food and a rapidly growing business.

Their catering extends to Lufthansa First Class Lounges and even Emirates Airline Lounge at JFK New York.

Vertical,

Do and Co and Kevansaray sound like winners! Do Viennese eat full dinners at such places after evening cultural events? (I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s a personal preference). While we tend to dine at 8 or 8:30pm here in New York,but eat early if going to the theater, ballet or opera. I%26quot;m not sure what time these musical events end in Vienna and by the time you get to the restaurant. and eat a big meal...it is quite late.

I have read about many suggestions for nearby places for light fare after an evening concert or opera, but don%26#39;t know if it really makes sense to have a huge meal so late at night at the better restaurants.

When we travel to foreign cities, we tend to either do one or the other ---have a leisurely nice dinner someplace special or go to a cultural event. My husband doesn%26#39;t like to start a long special dinner at 10pm, although we have done that in Sydney, Rome and Helsinki and it was fine. Our %26quot;challenge%26quot; in Vienna is that there are so many wonderful music venues (multiple choices every night!) that I%26#39;m concerned that we may not be able to give the restaurant opportunities adequate attention. Perhaps a good reason for a future visit.

Cheers,

Pamela

|||

HuSanNiang, Thank you so very much for the information on vegetarian restaurants in Vienna. We tend not to actually go to vegetarian restaurants, although it is always good to have the reference, just in case. The croation food suggestion sounds interesting since we love seafood. Croatia is high up on my list of places I want to visit. We%26#39;ve been waiting until they had land tours (in the beginning of tourism there, everything was cruises). I%26#39;ve just recently seen a new tour by a company we%26#39;ve used a number of times which is land only. Hopefully we%26#39;ll make it there soon. Have you been?

Thanks again for the restaurant suggestions,

Pamela

|||

I was in Croatia several years ago but it has changed soo much., so my impressions are not too helpful.

I have a couple of American training colleagues coming frequently to Vienna and this restaurant is always their first choice

. The next one is PARS which is just 5-6 Minutes away on the same street. It´s said to be the best Persian restaurant in Vienna and normally you need to reserve a table well in advance . They do have some vegetarian dishes , but the main focus is on meat http://www.pars.at/

|||

HuSanNiang, Great feedback on the popularity of the Croatian Restaurant Konoba....hopefully we will get to try it..so many things to do and see in 5 days! Speaking of Persia....Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Beirut, Jordan....all places I dream of being able to visit one day (my husband is less adventurous than I)

|||

Many in Vienna and elsewhere in Austria will have their major meal at midday.

I do not always live that way but find it is especially good when attending the theater or opera.

I usually then have a soup and perhaps a pastry in late afternoon- then a small meal after the evening.

Most concerts, operas, concerts finish about 10:00 in the evening- still time to eat.

My favorites- After the State Opera-

Cafe Sirk- just across the street from the Opera in back part of Hotel Bristol ( separate entrance)

Cafe Sacher- Sacher Hotel - just behind the Opera.

Restaurant Smutny - Elisabethstrasse one just beyond the Ring-

Musikverein

Kervansaray- a light fish dish

Volksoper-

Cafe Weimar- Wahringerstrasse- about 150 meters downhill from Volksoper- excelent food, soups,pastry, nice atmosphere including piano music. many performers visit here too.

Be certain to try austrian wine especially the whites.

|||

Vertical....another excellent suggestion about having our main meal mid-day if we%26#39;re going out for evening perfomances. That is what we will plan to do. A light something after the opera or concert will be perfect.

Which place in your opinion has the best Sacher Torte. (I%26#39;ve read not the Hotel Sacher, surprisingly.) Is the Imperial Torte at the Bristol chocolate? It seems to be highly recommended. Thank you as always. Cheers, Pamela

Train Vienna -> Paris

I am planning on travelling via overnight train from Venice to Vienna, then from Vienna to Paris a few days later.

I intend to purchase a SelectPass to travel, but I am not sure whether I need a 3-country pass or a 4-country pass. Can someone please advise?

Thanks in advance.

|||

%26gt;I intend to purchase a SelectPass to travel, but I am not sure whether I need a 3-country pass or a 4-country pass. Can someone please advise?

???

Are these your only longer trips in Europe? If yes, why do you want an expensive pass for only two trips? It is a bit like buying a car when you only want a taxi ride...

|||

Oops, sorry, forgot to mention that I%26#39;m going from Rome to Venice by train.

According to what I had calculated, there would not be much difference in either paying full-fare for point-to-point tickets, or buying a pass and travelling...

One week too long?

I have a week of holiday from work at the end of May 2007 and I intend to travel to Vienna. Can anyone advise as to whether an entire week in Vienna would be too long? If so, I am thinking about doing a combination of Vienna and Munich. Can anyone advise how much a train would cost between them and the best route to take?

Vielen Dank im Voraus.

|||

If you have interests in art, museums, and/or classical music, I think you%26#39;ll find tons to do in a week in Vienna. If you prefer other things when you travel, you may find the time hangs quite heavy on your hands. It really depends what you want to do.

You could go to Munich as well; there are direct train connections (I think taking about 5.5 hrs; not sure about the price but you could check on www.bahn.de for times and prices; I%26#39;d expect it to cost about 80 euros one way though maybe I overestimate). Munich strikes me as a kind of boring version of Vienna however (you can tell I%26#39;m partisan) with less good museums, art, and music and no Riding School :)

May is a lovely time to go, too, and it%26#39;s usually just enjoying the first flush of summer warmth then, with the ice cream parlours reopening and everyone cheery with the prospect of good weather. There are possibilities for day trips from Vienna which might be a way of working some variety into your holiday - like the visit to Melk/Krems with a trip on the Danube, or a daytrip to Bratislava in Slovakia.

Vienna rewards concentration; if you have a longer time then you can really get to know something of the city instead of just rushing between the main tourist spots. I like to have time for extensive sitting in cafes, reading, eating, thinking ... Vienna is perfect for that!

rol

|||

Much to do in Vienna for a week stay..

tourist website

www.info.wien.at

will provide much information for you.

Visits to Palaces, Museums, Parks, sidewalk cafes.

Much culture - with concerts , opera, theater etc.

Music from rock to jazz to Opera.

Fine Arts Museum, Museum Quarter ,Liechenstein Museum- some of the best collections in the world.

Shopping- antiques, clothing etc.

Many opportunites for day trips

example - a trip to Melk Abbey combined with a trip to the Danube River. A full day.

A day trip to wine country and visits to wineries.

A day in Bratislava 1 hour by train- 70 minutes by boat on the Danube.

Budapest- 2 hours by train and a nice full day of sightseeing.

Perhaps something for everyone.

Ski Areas Close To Maria Alm, Austria 16-23Dec2006

Folkes, I have a feeling that there will not be enough Snow in Maria Alm this year (16-23 Dec 06) for the ski area to be open. Does anybody know which ski areas are nearby and have some snow / skiing open at the moment. We do have a car and can therefore travel.

Also, I think there are 2 different ski passes covering different areas. Can anybody tell me anything about the areas covered by the different ski passes they know about.

Happy Skiing to you all.

|||

The skipass with most opportunities is the skiamade.

www.skiamade.at

this site will provide latest snow info and openings and resort info.

Not many places open . More to open perhaps next weekend. A little snow came over the weekend. Some cold temperatures at higher elevations let snow cannons work too. But still warmer than usual this time of year.

It appears Obertauern has best snow but no great depths yet.

You must almost check daily to see the changes.

|||

Schmittenhoehe in Zell am See will probably be your best. If that doesn%26#39;t pan out, try Kitzsteinhorn/Kaprun glacier, about another 25km past Zell am See.

Also, the Saalbach valley and its various ski resorts may have snow, even if it is the artificial stuff.

Otherwise, come to Colorado. The dollar is low and the snow is high.

|||

We are thinking of coming out your way either Feb time or next season. where do you recommend for some good varied skiing... and how cold is it Xmas time and Feb time ?...... and thanks to the comments I%26#39;ve recieved.

|||

If your comment %26quot;out your way%26quot; refers to Colorado, I prefer Summit County, about 70 miles east of Denver.

It has 4 major ski areas: They all have very good websites,

My preference is Copper Mountain, at the foot of Vail Pass. It is a smaller resort, but has agreat variety of terrain, from very easy to very difficult, as well as all kinds of special terrain for snowboarding.The mountains laid out so that the easy skiing is to the west, the hard skiing to the east and there are several back bowls.

There is an excellent, free, intra-resort bus service, as well as free busses to the other 3 resorts. The base of copper is at about 9200 ft.

Next in order of my preference is Keystone, larger than Copper, again with very varied terrain. Part of Keystone is Arapahoe basisn, at about 12,000ft I believe it is Colorado%26#39;s highest ski area. Some intermedikate, but more expert skiing.

The biggest ski area in Summit county is Breckenridge. It is huge and an actual town, not just a resort. It%26#39;s its size that I don%26#39;t like, although the skiing is superb.

It takes about 1/2 to 3/4 hour to get from one resort to the other. Always through the town of Frisco

You can get to all the Summit County resorts from Denver Interantional Airport by shared-ride minibusses. Rental cars in Denver are expensive, they add about 40% in surcharges to the regular rental fee. But having a car has the advantage that you can move faster from one resort to the other and to food markets in Frisco. Also, you can take day trips to Winterpark, Ski Cooper (that%26#39;s where I go on busy weekends at Copper etc.) and Vail.

The busy times are Christmas-New Year and around mid-March, when schools have their vavations and skiers come by the bus loads from Texaas, Missouri, etc.

Temps. are pleasant during the day, cold at night.

One other major ski area is around Salt Lake City (Alta, Snowbird, Park City, eyc.) But that%26#39;s a bit further than Denver. On the other hand, all ski areas are within 45 minutes driving time from Salt Lake City and- especially Alta - powder hound haven..

Well and if your comment was directed at the Austrians, than they have to help you, although I jave skied all reas I mentioned in my earlier posting.

Snow yet ??

Can anyone report on the snow situation in Saalbach ?

|||

Look to this website for up- to date information on snow and ski conditions.

Zwölferkogel has a lift open but this is only due to Saalbach having a World Cup Ski Race there this week and I am certain that all efforts go to this area to prepare it.

The website also shows weather prognosis and temperatures. Webcams really do not provide much help as a little snow will still look good but is not enough for skiing.

Nothing very favorable regarding weather except late night low temperatures permit use of snow cannons.

|||

Thanks so much vertical ! I will check this site.......

I was wondering about the canons too - when do they start using them to prepare slopes? What do the weather conditions have to be to enable the use of the canons?

Thanks for the useful information !

|||

Vertical - I forgot to add that the website you mentioned did not come through on your final post !???

|||

Sorry

www.saalbach.at

click on english then to weather / snow

snow cannons have now become regular thing at many resorts.

They need temperatures about freezing to begin work- I think some can be used at temperatures at +1 but colder is much better.

Help/need info on Vienna hotel Top Derag

I booked this apt/ hotel for April...and I%26#39;m not sure why. It sounded good at the time, but I can%26#39;t find where I got that information from. If you have stayed at this hotel, will you please let me know what you think of it??

|||

Perhaps you found it on Priceline. Not one ot the best thing to book hotel knowing nothing about it. In this case this is a nice 4 star hotel- better known as the Kaiser Franz Joseph.They have rooms and apartments.

It is on Sieveringstrasse near to the streetcar#38.

Downside- it is far from the major tourist sites -probably 20+ minutes to the Ring on #38.

Hotel is in a shopping area -

by bus takes you to heurigers in Sievering - 10 minutes

Grinzing 5-8 minutes by #38

Hotel is a 4 star, I think- a nice place well appointed rooms.

Traveling to Hintertux

We will be traveling to HIntertux, staying at the Bergland Hotel over Christmas. We have not been to this area before. Does anyone know this Hotel? What is around it? Is this a small town? What is in the area to do besides the skiing?

|||

Hintertux is a very small village - exists really only due to the glacier and skiing.

The Zillertal ( Ziller Valley) becomes very narrow after the town of Mayrhofen.

The road after Mayrhofen often need chains to reach Hintertux. It often becomes very crowded with traffic especially during vacation exchange days Saturday and Sunday.

If the winter lacks snow Hintertux gets extra day skiiers from lower areas in the valley.

.

Hintertux is hotels and sport shops and not much else. Life will center around your hotel and skiing.

Skiing and touring are the sports.

Hotels have bars but not big nightlife.

Many hotels have pools - Bergland does too - a 4 star hotel as you probably know already.

All places have a good standard but be prepared for many people during this Holiday.

The weather on the glacier can also be much, much colder and more windy than found at the base stations. Dress extra warmly

|||

Thanks, Vertical. I hoped you would reply after seeing some of your posts. I am traveling with my husband while he is in Germany on business. Someone recommended this hotel as a nice place to spend the Christmas holiday. Do you know if it will be difficult to find a place for Christmas dinner? It seems Mayrhofen has the most variety of things to do? How difficult will it be to go back and forth from our hotel to there? By bus? Any other towns we should see? We will be there for 5 days, from the 22nd through the 26th. We do ski but don%26#39;t live to ski as some do. We are looking forward to the beauty of the area, doing a little exploring, enjoying the %26quot;winter%26quot; and maybe some holiday spirit.

This is referred to as a glacier?

|||

Usually these hotels are booked on a half board basis-

breakfast and dinner included in room price per person- thus no worry about meals- in 4 or 5 star hotels the food is normally very good - thus no worry about Christmas Eve dinner or Christmas Day.

However if you are not a ski fanatic Hintertux may not be the place for you. This is really a ski only place as mentioned before.

The drive from Mayrhofen can be a little hard in snowy weather. In fact, a place along the road outside of Mayrhofen where drivers MUST put chains on if bad weather. This is just before the first steep climb.

Bus transfers are ok during the day but limited at night and I would not plan on staying in Hintertux and eating in Mayrhofen.

This is at minimum 30-40 minute transfer.

Most skiing is done on the Glacier or in an area at the mid station of the lifts above Hintertux.

You may wish to look at accomodations in Lanersbach or Finkenberg Just above Mayrhofen.

I have been to the Sport Hotel Stock many times.

This is a family run place that has grown over the years to include spa and pool and many activities. Josef Stock is a brother of Leonard Stock, olympic downhill champion from some years ago.

look on

www.sporthotel-stock.com

the photos accurately reflect the hotel.

Mayrhofen is nice but tends to have many young visitors that want to party all night -

Hotel Elisabeth is the best in town.( Mayrhofen)

Neuhaus also nice.

Good skiing in Finkenberg connected to Lanersbach and Mayrhofen

Whereever you plan to book do it quickly as this Holiday is important and many hotels have many returning guests.

You may find that many hotels want only extended stays for the entire Holiday.

If you have more questions please post

|||

question for vertical - we are staying in mayrhofen for a week through december 30, but need to figure out what to do for 2 day (new years), any suggestions if we should try to stay there or any other fun place to go near by. we are flying back to us from munich on january 2nd and having hard time planning last 2 days of our vacation. it seems that all of the hotels in the alps rent by the week. any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thank you in advance!

|||

Sorry to reply so late, but I have been away on vacation.

Why not continue your stay in or near Mayrhofen.

If you do not mind a pension look for one in the nearby towns of Hippach, Ramsau, Brandberg

go to the mayrhofen website- click on accomodations and search under rooms.

The smaller places will rent for just a few days

|||

dear vertical, thank you so much for your info. i have couple more questions for you. i decided to rent a car , since it doesn%26#39;t look like there is much snow and i have to go back to munich airport couple of days after i get to mayrhofen to pick up a friend. so, first question - is it usuall that there is no snow at this time of the year? question two- what do you think would be good places to drive to in austria(or beyond) if we have the car?

thank you!

|||

Many ski resorts in Austria would be opening about now for the season under normal circumstances.

Some snow at higher elevations perhaps 1200 meters or more. Usually cold temperatures allow the snow cannons to work-

This year neither cold or real snow yet.

This is not usual weather.

Munich Airport to Mayrhofen takes about 2 1/2 hours.

Be certain to have a car with snow tires.

A word of caution-

the autobahn Munich to Austria - then the Inntal autobahn gets very crowded on weekends. Often very long stalls especially to the ski resorts on Saturday and back north on Sunday.

Try to avoid travel on the weekend if possible.

Salzberg is about 2 1/2 hours by car from Mayrhofen- a nice day trip

Innsbruck about 40 minutes also OK.

Achensee is also a nice place. Nice lake and mountain views- 45 minutes perhps

Rattenberg an old village in the Inn Valley is known for many good glass shops- fun to shop if you like cut or painted glass.- 40 minutes

I would avoid the Swarowski Glass World - not worth the time to visit in my opinion.

|||

Thank you so much for your advice. is it easy to go to Italy? Any stickers for the car I need to get?

|||

You need a vignette to travel on Austrian major roads.

You will see signs to buy one at several locations( gas stations rest stops) before the border Germany- Austria. You can buy a short term one for little money .

But be certain to get one - police like to give tickets.. But check the rental car- they often already have one- ask rental agent.

Also be certain to drive with lights on day and night a requirement for Austria for safety reasons.

Italy- Inntal Autobahn to Innsbruck then to the Brenner autobahn through Brenner pass into Italy.

Brenner road has a toll as do the Italian autostradas,

Bozen ( Bolzano ) and Sterzing ( Vipitano -sp.)are nice towns in Italynot too far from the border.

perhaps 3 hours.

|||

A bit late I know, but I%26#39;ve just been reading these posts. Can I offer this.... we stay at the Stock hotel - the food last year was fantastic. It%26#39;s a small family run place and you are made very, very welcome. The rooms are not pristine (decoration wise) but very comfy.

The point I wanted to make is that we hired a car from Munich with National - and it seems that all returning hired cars go through the same intimate inspection. A chip was discovered in our windscreen, which bearing in mind the stop start traffic on the road and that we did not use the car once we%26#39;d arrived, we disputed. We returned to the office and got a document signed to say that we were not responsible for the chip - but a couple of months later, we were charged via our credit card for this damage. Just a word of warning. Get documentation to say you were not responsible for damages.

Finkenberg is lovely, but tiny.

Cheap one-way flight from Vienna to Amsterdam

I want a single flight from Vienna to Amsterdam on 31 May 2007. Are there any budget airlines that fly this route?

|||

Nope, but you can depart from Bratislava airport using SkyEurope. There is a coach service between Vienna and Bratislava airport organized by SkyEurope for an extra charge.

Paris to Athens

My friend and i have 6 weeks in Europe. We fly into Paris and want to end up in Athens.

Roughly our plan is to have 3 days in Paris, fly to Rome for 4 days, travel to Cinque Terre, train to Salzburg in Austria for 4 days, travel to Croatia for 10 days, then down to the Greek Isands for about 10 days.

The main questions i have include travel. How do you get from Austria to Split in Croatia: Train, Fly, Bus?

How do you get from Dubrovnik to Athens: Train, Fly, Bus?

Is this too much travelling for the time period? Will we end up on the train for our entire trip?

And, we are young and want lively places to stay. Where are the best party towns within these countries?

We are Uni students so the cheaper the better.

Thankyou!

|||

Train networks in Europe are very dense, you should reach almost every place by train. In Southeastern Europe (Former Yugoslavia) it gets more complicated due to the development and isolation during the war of those countries. Also Greece is not a country dedicated to rail networks. In the meantime most parts have recovered, and are worth to be visited.

Your schedule is dense, but I think it is manageable.

From Austria ( I assume Salzburg) it is not that easy to reach Dubrovnik. I think that all connections go via Zagreb. Dubrovnik to Athens seems to be an adventure, because I doubt that there is a proper train connection. It%26#39;s probably better to book a flight out of Dubrovnik, but fares are expectedly high due to lacking competition. Alternatively you could query flight out of Zagreb.

If you can drop your intention to visit Dubrovnik, you could save some money. You could head for Vienna or Munich, where low(er) cost flights are available. It%26#39;s just a clue, not a recommendation!

I do not know who gave you advice regarding bank cards in machines.

I assume you refer to ATMs commonly known here as Bankomat.

You can call your bank to confirm this , but your bank cards should work without problems in Austria to my knowledge. 4 digit pin code .

many shops will accept credit cards. Some restaurants perhaps will not , But with access to euro at the Bankomat , this is no problem.

|||

We have no problems with getting cash with our cashcards. The only critisism is in Austria they tend to dish out high notes (100, 200) instead of breaking down the notes (10, 20, 50). Still it doesn%26#39;t really matter. It gets spent either way!!!

Soell is a great place with plenty of reasonably priced restaurants. Certainly is not the most expensive resort we have been to. Try the Postwirt %26amp; Feldwebel hotel restaurants in the centre. You will have to reserve, but good value. hearty meals. The Feldwebel does, or did do for the past several years, half price Gluhwein between 3 -5pm in their hotel bar. Yum!!

The indoor leisure centre has pool and the sauna/steam room facilites (which are all naked zone areas, if you don%26#39;t mind stripping off. Well worth it for the relaxation!) Good walking routes %26amp; rodelbahn, sleigh rides and the local city trips, as mentioned.

Enjoy........

Christmas Dinner

I%26#39;ll be in Salzburg for the period 23/12/06 to 30/12/06 with my family (2 adults %26amp; 2 children) and I would like to have some suggestions for Christmas dinner (24/12/06). Pls send any e mail addresses if you have to book a table for Christmas evening

|||

We shall be in Salzburg from 24 - 28 Dec and have booked Goldener Hirsch, they have a fab menu and were very helpful. They are definitely open on 25 %26amp; 26.

Hope it snows soon!

|||

We have also booked at Goldener Hirsch (Herzl Restaurant as Restaurant Goldnener Hirsch is booked only for guests). The salzburg.info website has an extensive list of restaurants, at which you can have dinner on Christmas Eve (including prices etc)- check …salzburg.info/pics/weihsilv06gastroen.pdf

Make your booking as soon as possible and ...Kala na perasete!!

|||

Hello Elena,

Many thnks for your reply. I tried to book at Herzl restaurant but they replied that were fully booked. Now I%26#39; m waiting for a reply from Sheraton Hotel. I hope that at the end I%26#39;ll manage to book somewhere. If not I%26#39;ll make a reservation at our hotel NH Salzburg.

I wish that we all have a pleasant stay in Salzburg;

5 Hours in Zurich

Hello,

I will have 5-6 hours transit in Vienna on December 19th.

Is there anything I can do to make a good use of this transit time?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

|||

Zurich or Vienna ?

|||

I ask above question as you ask the same question on Swiss forum about Zurich.

Unlikely you have two 5-6 hours transit in both places.

|||

I will have 5-6 hours transit in both places in two different days!

1st time skier 1st time to austria

HI

I am travelling from Dublin to Salzburg for a skiing holiday(party of 6) in january 2007 to Zell am see. we are all first timers both skiing and austria. basically has anyone stayed in the Apartment Unterberger? Is food and drink pricy. what are the best bars to go to for apres ski, would anyone recommend a day trip...so many questions. You see i am team leader on this and am very nervous about the outcome!

|||

Can%26#39;t help you with the specifics of Zell as we ski at home and only go in the summer . Have you tried www.snowheads.co.uk

Deb

|||

My son worked in Zell for 4 months, really nice resort. A Large Beer is about Euro 3 / large glass of wine about Euro 3.5 I think that the unterberger is in Zellermoos close to Shuttdorf near the Areitbahn ski lift - have alook at the website www.sbg.at/haus-unterberger

If you are closer to Shuttdorf a great apres ski Bar is Sunrise, and a great place to go is the Dorfschenke. In Zell am See centre, Resi Bar, B17 (usually later in the evening) Lupos Bar, Greens and Craisy Daisy very popular. The Karamba Bar (near the tennis courts) also very popular in the evenings as well as Diele night club There are plenty of ski buses from Zell to Shuttdorf and the Glacier

Very good restaurants in Zell called Eihen Kehr, and the Kumpferkessel ( sorry about spelling)

Also have a look at the website www.zellkaprun.com

thanks bluefields appreciate your help

Hope you all have a great holiday

|||

Hello,

You will love Zell its a lovely place and its reasonably priced. (it will be very cold though so take warm clothes!)

I have never skiied there before (we too are heading over in January 2007) but i have been there is in the summer and its great.

All of the restaurants are attached to hotels so there is lots of choice. We are staying at the Hotel Salzburgerhof and they have a great restaurant where non guests can eat too!

Enjoy your holiday and dont get to stressed.

Cheers Kate

|||

Hi HeyHoMeDaddyOh,

Sorry that I%26#39;m not in a position to help you on Zell but I%26#39;d really appreciate any feedback you might have on your time there upon your return. We%26#39;re travelling there in Feb and like yourself, we are first timers and while we have young kids with us, any feedback you can give would be greatly appreciated. We%26#39;re staying in the hotel Berner in case you see it on your travels.

Thanks

Ronan

Have you booked into ski school? If so you wont have too much spare time. Ski bus is easy free transport,Kaprun and the Glacier are good for a day out only 30 minutes away.

Help Last minute trip to Central Europe

HI!

I am dying to go to Vienna or any Austrian city plus Prague this Xmas and New Year. I am having trouble finding any package....any suggestions?

Maybe another city that anyone would suggest would be easier!!!

thanks!!

|||

Why do you need a package?

Book airfare and the hotels yourself- very easy to do.

Trip Advisor offers many good suggestions on hotels and sightseeing.

Or check Austrian Air website for their packages.

|||

Hi! i%26#39;ve tried to purchase the tickest but they are also so expensive...and most airlines only have business or 1st class available!!

Volksopera for 25.12.06 - Hansel and Gretel

Any advice on the best pics for the 17 or 28 euro seats?

Is Parkett 17-21 just plain bad?

How about 2.Rang 4.-6.?

Or 2.Rang 7.-10. seats 11-13 in Row 7?

I am traveling with 2 friends who are not opera or classical music fans but I think they would enjoy this production.

Thanks!

ant

|||

For myself, I would prefer the parkett - the hearing and sight lines from those rows aren%26#39;t bad. I sometimes get tickets there and prefer to sit as close to the front of that section as possible (as further back is more under the balcony which muffles the sound rather more) but it is sloping so you will still have a good view.

The Volksoper seats are comfy unlike the Theater an der Wien or the cheaper seats in the Staatsoper so that%26#39;s good too!

Hope that helps!

rol

|||

Parkett 17-21 has several seats with views obstructed by posts- check this very carefully.

This area is under the balcony and the sound can be not good at times.

2nd rang in the middle ( higher numbered seats can be OK but not for people afraid of heights. Usually good sound.

Remember that this is a family day in Austria. You may find many children attending this performance.

|||

Thanks for your quick advice. I think I will go with Parkett row 17 seats 6-5-4 on the right at the 28 euro price level. It will be slightly off to the side but not obstructed by the post right next to us.

Thank you once again for your help! Now to find a restaurant for a nice dinner afterwards since Hansel und Gretel will run 6-8pm. I%26#39;m thinking of going to Puerstner based on your recommendations!

|||

BTW I just tried to purchase tickets and wanted to get the Vienna Card 10% discount - is there a way to do that online?

Thanks!

|||

I checked the Volksoper website and apparently the discount with the Vienna Card is only valid for tickets purchased at the evening box office - see

volksoper.at/Content.Node2/en/kartenverkauf/…

Since as Vertical says, this is a big day out for families, I%26#39;d prefer to order my tickets in advance rather than risk trying to get them at the last moment.

Those are the seats i would have chosen myself; I think you should get a decent view and hearing from there.

One possibility for food is Cafe Weimar, a block or two down the hill from the Volksoper, back towards town. It%26#39;s very pleasant with good hot food and luscious cakes too! I like Puerstners as well - but I don%26#39;t know if I could wait as long as it would take to get back to town and go round to the Riemergasse to get my dinner after the show!

rol, greedy as ever!

|||

Purchase tickets immediately.

Probably, performance will sell out soon.Do not wait until you arrive in Vienna.

Roley makes good suggestion for Cafe Weimar.

I usually go there after the Volksoper- nice atmosphere with excelent pianist.

Food and pastries good.

Many performers at the Volksoper often stop in too.

|||

Thanks again for your advice. I just purchased the tickets in the Parkett section, and sent an email for a dinner reservation at Cafe Wiemar.
