Elefant or Stein?

Am staying in Salzburg for 10th wedding anniversary in January - anyone had any experience of either the Best Western Elefant or the Hotel Stein? Torn between the two! Since it%26#39;s 10th anniversary would like to do romantic sleigh ride - are there places close by to Salzburg or is it worth travelling to somewhere like Schladming?

I think I would go for the Elefant. I%26#39;ve stayed there in the past and thought it was well equipped, with nice modern bathrooms and generally clean and smart. The location is bang in the centre of the old town which is excellent (especially in the winter months when you don%26#39;t want to have to schlep miles through belting snowstorms to get home!) Good breakfasts too. I%26#39;ve not stayed at the Stein but eaten in their roof terrace restaurant a few times so I%26#39;ve had a bit of a nose at the place. The location is good too, but right on the river bank so exposed to icy blasts, and the interiors looked a bit shabby and grubby, in the public areas. I think the Elefant would be more elegant for an anniversary stay.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Roley - will go for the Elefant. Am secretly quite pleased that you recommended this one. We got married in Kenya so it seems rather fitting to be spending our anniversary in a hotel named after one of the %26quot;Big Five%26quot;!

I%26#39;d go for the Elefant too. I don%26#39;t like the Stein. I%26#39;ve never stayed there but I too have eaten at the rooftop restaurant. The interior is weird and gloomy. It is situated on the river, with wonderful views of the city, but it%26#39;s also right at one of the busiest road junctions. I%26#39;ve sat on the bus there wondering how noisy it must be in the hotel. Enjoy your stay.
