Salt mines and europark

Can anyone advise the closest salt mines trip availabe in December. Is it possible to get to the Europark shopping mall from Salzburg centre or bus station?

HI

Ithink Hallein salt mines are the closest but check on their opening times.

Regular buses go from the centre to Europark.

No idea about the Saltmines but I go to Europark quite often - it%26#39;s very easily reached on the no. 1 Bus, destination %26quot;Europark!%26quot; That runs from the Hauptbahnhof to the Europark and you can board at Mirabellplatz (outside the gardens) or the stop by the Landestheater, or on the old town side of the river, at Hanuschplatz near the key or Herbert von Karajanplatz (by the Pferdeschwemme fountain and don%26#39;t forget to pop into Cafe Niemetz and get your Mozart Polsterl! If only I had had the sense to get a giant-size family pack when I had the chance...)

It%26#39;s quite a long ride to Europark - 20-30 mins? - and you get off when you see a big glass monstrosity on your left - everyone else will be getting off there too. The bus stop back to town is right outside the entrance.

It%26#39;s a standard one-zone journey and if you have a Salzburg card or bus pass it will be valid for the trip.

Thank you will do that if the weather is bad as it is showing rain next week which is a bit disappointing! What is a Mozart polster?

A Mozart Polsterl is a treat in store! It%26#39;s a special chocolate only available from Cafe Niemetz (which as I mentioned is behind the Pferdeschwemme near the entrance to the tunnel leading under the Moenschberg). It is a huge square truffle with chocolate centre flavoured with wine liqueur and raisins, covered in dark chocolate - absolutely delicious and miles nicer than the Mozart balls available in all the shops. Niemetz is worth a visit anyway because it%26#39;s a lovely little cafe serving delicious cakes, coffee and hot chocolate - and you can buy the Polsterl individually or made up in packs to take away. I spent quite some time in there last August when it was also raining hard. I hope it lets up a bit during your visit!

Hi Roley,

I see from all your posts that you are the expert on Salzburg. We are going 1st Feb for 5 nights. Looking for advice on hotels close to old town as I%26#39;m told that%26#39;s the nicest, also not too far to walk to centre and shopping for a little browsing. We are also hoping to take in a day or 2 skiing or should I say trying while there. I have some information on the snow shuttle that operates daily from the city. Any help/tips on hotels would be great as I guess it is time I confirmed something, I%26#39;m a little unsure of locations ect as I have never been before and as I am booking for a group of 4 I dont want the others to be dissappointed with my choice. We want something not hugely expensive but withing walking distance and with the usual facilities. I am probably on the wrong thread for this request.

What I know about skiing would go on a postage stamp with room to spare so can%26#39;t offer you much information there ...

However, for hotels, probably the best areas are either in the old town proper, which is near the cathedral and the fortress (very cute!) or over the other side of the river (%26quot;new town%26quot;) which is closer to the railway station and has more buses for getting about.

Having said that, Salzburg is very small so with the good buses, it%26#39;s easy to get round.

Ah I now know one thing about skiing - the Snow Shuttle seems to depart from the square near the Mirabell Gardens, which is on the new town side of the river, so that might suit you best.

Mid-price hotels in that area include the Austrotel and the Gablerbrau both of which I%26#39;ve stayed in and liked - the Gablerbrau is very nice and has loads of restaurants right to hand (about three in that street and quite a few more round the corner!) It has a lovely restaurant-pub opposite - Zum Fidelen Affen - which would be nice for apres-ski, it seems to me!

There are other hotels in that area, up the Linzergasse such as the Amadeus and the Trumer Stube and the Hofwirt (further up), and the Wolf Dietrich nearby. Hotels near the Kongresshaus would also be close to the Mirabell square though further from other attractions (eg. Stieglbrau, Markus Sittikus, Renaissance Hotel Congress Centre).

It might be worth doing a search on your dates to see what%26#39;s available, and then ask again if you find something and want to check the location. A good place to start is the Salzburg tourist information website hotel booking engine - see

http://www2.salzburg.info/hotels_216.htm

I%26#39;ve also booked hotels in Salzburg through www.hrs.de (which is used as the hotel partner by Austrian Airlines) and www.nethotels.com which is affiliated with the Vienna tourist information site though it books hotels all over Austria.

Hope that helps as a starter!

Just back from my trip and did the Berchesdagen salt mines trip with Panorama Tours and have to recommend it as it was really good . The salt mine trip was really good fun and kids would love the slides in particular as well as the train ride down. We also went up into the mountains and the views amazing as was the snow. We took the 1 bus using our salzburg card which proved great value for money and went to the Euro Mall. It was nice quite geared to younsters with the Zara and Claire type shops but a good choice for all ages and nice cafes as well as Ikea alongside and a neat Christmas Market outside. Salzburgchristmas and other markets were lovely the nicest we have been to and a trip to Hellbrun with the Salzburg card is nice as is the small zoo. The Crown Plaza Hotel was excellent in the new town but a few minutes walk to the old town The new Town has nice restaurants and shops we liked it very much but he old town is a fairy tale .We will be going again for sure
