Travel to St Anton am Arlberg from Munich

Hi fellow skiers,

My husband %26amp; I are travelling from Munich to St Anton in mid February and wondering if we should train or get a hire car from Munich? The Resort looks spread out and thought that a car would be best, but what state will the roads be in, to drive? We are from Australia and lack snow, but have skied in France out of peak season. We are unsure of the degree of difficulty we%26#39;ll have, driving through the Alps in high season.

Hi solmanic

I would advise a car. If you hire make sure it has winter tyres and snow chains in the boot. The motorway from Munich is ok, it%26#39;s once you turn off and go up the Arlberg pass. Normally it is fine, but if it is snowing heavily, you will need chains.

St. Anton is a good intermediates/off piste resort, but the ski pass covers Lech, Zurs and Sonnenkopf and although the skibus goes between resorts, we always take the car for quickness %26amp; parking is free at Lech (unless in underground carpark). Also with a car, there are plenty of other resorts along that motorway - Ischgl, Oetz valley, Montafon if you want to stay a few nights elsewhere. Beware that driving saturdays is a nightmare from Munich and always long queues!! (change over day) so if you can go any other day I would advise it. You will pass several large ski resorts along the way, hence heavy traffic, plus many northern Germans come over the border south of Munich into Austria. I would say 3 hours to St. Anton.

Hope this helps. Have fun as the skiing is good there.

Hey teajay,

Thanks for that - big help. We%26#39;ve decided on taking a car. Is all the parking in the main part of town paid parking?

Can you or anyone else recommend an area/place to stay in St Anton. Is St Jacob too far out? What about Stubens to stay in? We are looking for either half board or self-cater. We%26#39;ve been to the website and other sites are so confused with options. We want to book this soon.

thanks

Hi Solmanic

I would recommend St. Jacob or St. Christoph. Stuben is a little far out of town, but depends what you want. There are a handful of hotels in Stuben if that is all you want. St. Jakob is a little village and the accomodation is reasonable there. It is close to the Nasserein Lifts, which is also a good place to stay and still only 15 min stroll into the centre of St. Anton. St. Christoph has a few hotels, bars etc and great access to the slopes.Have a look at www.tiscover.at and if you want self catering look under Ferienwohnungs (apartments). If not ,go half pension as reservations need to be made at restaraunts in high season!

Parking in St. Anton is near the railway station, I believe it is free. There are plenty of ski buses though to and from villages (check map or ask hotel for nearest busstop). Lech has free parking at the Schlosskopf chairlift. Hope this helps a little!?*

Cheers!

Thanks teajay!

On the map I saw, St Jacob seemed a lot further out. I%26#39;m glad it isn%26#39;t, as we%26#39;ve found some good accommodation out that way. As we%26#39;re from Australia, when we see snow, we ski hard. So that week will involve, skiing, eating and sleeping. No partying, so it really doesn%26#39;t matter where we stay, particularly knowing that shuttles are available.

Thanks for all that!

A good choice if you don%26#39;t want Apres ski %26amp; partying. It%26#39;s quiet, peaceful %26amp; gratis bus service. Have a great time %26amp; it%26#39;ll make a change from beaching it all summer/winter (depending where you are!!!)

I%26#39;m from Brisbane, 1 hour north from the Gold Coast and about 18 hours from the snow (which only has about 2 months of good skiing a year and then August is really the only time you think about going). I definitely live in the wrong country to love skiing, hence the trips OS as much as possible. Brisbane%26#39;s weather averages 10-30ÂșC per year. It%26#39;s a beautiful place to live.

We%26#39;ve skiied at Chamonix, Les Arcs %26amp; Tigne in France before, but not in Austria or Germany for that matter. What are the German resorts like?

|||

We are a couple of Brits who live near Lindau by Lake Constance (Bodensee) and so are on the German/Austrian/Swiss border. We initially only came for a year but are now going into our 6th! We have all these fab resorts on our doorstep and of couse the summers are fantastic with the mountain %26amp; lakes. Who would want to go back to the mad rat race that is sometimes the UK!?!

We prefer skiing in Austrian/German resorts rather than French simply because we find french resorts too purpose built and high rise! Austrian resorts are normally charming villages with plenty of atmosphere. The old tyrolean huts are lovely %26amp; welcoming. Apres ski can be more boystrous in Austria. They tend to ski hard, party hard from 4 - 8pm usually!!! It%26#39;s fun for a night, or for an earlydoors drink, if you can stand the Eurotrash music!! It%26#39;s very loud %26amp; European! The food is far better, in our opinion, on the mountains and in restaurants.

The only critisism I would have is that there is alot of pushing %26amp; shoving at lifts. They are not a nation for queing and tend to ski like they drive!! There are alot of would be Hermann Maiers on the slopes!! If you are up and on the slopes early and move off round the mountain early you will miss most of this! There are mainly Germans, Dutch %26amp; Brits at St. Anton. I would recommend a day at Lech. I prefer the skiing there and you must do the ski tour from Lech round to Zuers and back to Lech. It%26#39;s a lovely half day leisurely tour!

There is plenty to keep you occupied at St. Anton and the skiing can be tough if you want it. You will go to bed happily exhausted after a day on the mountains there. How long are you in Europe for??

Anything else you want to know, just let me know!!

%26gt; We are a couple of Brits who live near Lindau by Lake ... Who would want to go back to the mad rat race that is sometimes the UK!?!

I agree totally. Lindau is just %26quot;right there%26quot; to the ski resorts. You%26#39;ve chosen a great spot to live. My sister-in-law lives in London and moved to India and has now moved back to London for some unknown reason?

%26gt; We prefer skiing in Austrian/German resorts rather than French simply because we find french resorts too purpose built and high rise ......

Yes I must admit we haven%26#39;t stayed on snow in France because of the high rises, we tend to stay in the villages nearby.

We don%26#39;t drink (yes you read correctly, Australians that don%26#39;t drink alcohol - we do exist), but Food and coffee, are very important to us. Can you recommend a good place to eat in St Anton or nearby?

%26gt; The only critisism I would have is that there is alot of pushing %26amp; shoving at lifts. ... If you are up and on the slopes early and move off round the mountain early you will miss most of this!

We will be up the mountain early for sure.

Is this tour a guided one? We%26#39;ve seen on the website about a guided tour for a day. Have you done this and would you recommend it?

%26gt; ....How long are you in Europe for??

Our whole trip is 7 weeks - 1 week in Italy, 3 weeks in Germany (including the one skiing) and the rest of the time in the UK.

%26gt; Anything else you want to know, just let me know!!

We%26#39;re a bit unsure what route we should take to Berlin from the snow. We%26#39;re considering Salzburg - Prague or straight up the middle of Germany. We figured we%26#39;d come back another time and see West Germany. We have about a week to get to Berlin, as I%26#39;m tracing my family history just north of Berlin and want to spend a few days there and in Berlin itself. Can you recommend things to see if we went directly north? We%26#39;re into music (all sorts - I%26#39;m a music teacher), architecture (husband architect), modern art, cute villages and people watching.

Thanks for your discussions. I only discovered this recently and think it%26#39;s an excllent site!

Hi again

7 weeks is a nice long holiday. Fully packed by the sounds of it as well!

We ate out several times in St.Anton. For a traditional, cosy setting try the Alt St. Anton, for an upmarket %26amp; elegant evening try Museum %26amp; if you are into fondue try the Train. You will need to reserve tables and I am sure your accomodation will provide the numbers, or reserve for you.

Obviously, off piste is well known at St.Anton therefore guides are available by the dozen. We have never used a guide, so cant advise! If you take the cable car Valluga to the summit you can ski down the Pazietal toward Zuers (keen/experienced off pisters), then from above the Madloch chairlift at Zuers ski off piste to the little village of Zug. There is a 2 seater chairlift there to take you up to Lech. Alternatively, look at the ski routes, plan and enjoy those routes. They can be taxing at times! It depends what you%26#39;re looking for. Speak to your hotel owners. They can be very helpful and/or tell you who to speak to for better advice.

Finally, I would suggest Salzburg, up thu Passau to Prague (went this year and loved the place). Try and stay near the old town square for convenience and excellent restaurants. Charles bridge, jewish quater, little quater and the cathedral/castle area are a must. Archetecture, history, art %26amp; people watching are great! From there up thru Dresden, Leipzig and into Berlin. Ask about on the forums for more info on the other cities. They are beautiful cities in their own right. I tend to know more on Western Germany, than the East, which we would love to explore more! We stayed in the Kurfurstendamm area in Berlin as it was bustling, and easy access to the centre.

Have fun with your plans

regards

Teajay.
