I will be in Vienna for the first time over New Year. I have Jan 1 free to sight see/shop. What, if anything, will be open ?
Will the shops be closed? If most things are closed, has anyone got any suggestions on what to do?

Most all shops will be closed on New Years Eve and Day.
Major sightseeing places will be New Years - exception those that usually close on Monday ( New Years Day) such as the Kunsthistoriches Museum ( Fine Arts Museum) will be closed .
Schönbrunn Palace is open daily.
Most all music venues are open also-
Thus much to do.
Schönbrunn is a good place to go this day as fewer tourists at least in the morning Hofburg Palace too.
