We are considering staying in St Gilgen this summer as a base for a hiking week. I have been able to check train and bus schedules in the area, but wonder about the water ferries. If we were to plan a dinner or two in St Wolfgang, what time does the last ferry run? (We almost got stuck in Switzerland one year because the ferry stopped at 630!!) I%26#39;m really trying to plan this trip without renting a car. Thanks for any transportation advice!

This website has the ferry schedules for next summer:

As you%26#39;ll see, the ferries don%26#39;t run specially late on the Wolfgangsee either! You may find it possible to use the bus to get between St Wolfgang and St Gilgen (changing at Strobl) but even that%26#39;s likely only to be a bit after 8pm. Maybe lunch in St Wolfgang instead?
I had a holiday last summer based in Bad Ischl and I found the public transport excellent for getting to Salzburg, St Wolfgang, St Gilgen, and Hallstatt (and if I%26#39;d had time I could have gone to Traunsee too). Bad Ischl is nice for a visit during July-August because the Lehár festival is on then and you can spend your evenings hearing an operetta or two!
I%26#39;m planning to go back this year and stay a few days each in Bad Ischl, St Wolfgang, and Salzburg.
