Vienna Christmas Eve Church Service

My boyfriend and I would like to attend a mid-night mass in Vienna for Christmas eve. Not sure if it is the norm for tourists to attend mass and if the locals are accepting. Also, where should we go if we could?

Thanks a bunch!

It would be normal to see tourists at a Mass in Vienna. Churches are completely full usually.

Christmas Eve is celebrated by families with a gala evening meal and opening of gifts. Many will then attend Mass late that evening.

Arrive early if you want a seat.

A Church recommendation will depend on where you stay in the city.

A few in city center

Stephansdom- largest by far.

Schotten Church - on Freyung - At least 30-45 minutes before service to be certain of a seat.

University Church

Ignaz Seipel Platz at midnight - perhaps fewer tourists
