route from munich airport?

we are driving from munich airport to lech for our ski holiday this christmas. I am unsure of the best route as 2 routeplanners have thrown out 2 different routes eitherthe A95 southto Garmish and then on to Lech...or A96 WEST and then a14 down to lech...is this second option easier from the airport??? any thoughts would be much welcome.

thanks

Try mappy always the best route I found and you cango either way!

Hi Guys

If you drive around the A96 it%26#39;s about 2 hours to Bregenz, then a further hour to Lech. It%26#39;s ok, although if it is saturday there will be long queues at the Pfaender tunnel (b%26#39;tween germany/austria) upto an hour!! and the A96 narrows at 2 points to one lane!!!! (Aaaggh!).

Alternatively, the other route will take you over the fernpass, which is usually open, but will slow your journey down!? A friend of ours drove from Munich last weekend and came down the no 8 %26amp; 93 towards Innsbruck, then towards Bregenz on the A12. Motorway all the way %26amp; took him 3 hours to Lech. Personally I would take the A96, especially if you dont have winter tyres.(although they would be advisable) and chains! It could be snowing heavy by then, with any luck and you would need the chains to get upto Lech from the motorway! God knows we need it. Was booked to go to Lech last weekend, but we had to divert elsewhere. Still they have snow now?? Where are you flying in from?? Bristol airport??

thanks for the info - i think i need to get myself a good map....will look at the routes you suggest...the mappy routefinder website was a good one thanks for the tip...yes we fly in from bristol to munich and are staying at the Monazabon hotel in lech - do you know it? have been studying the web cam on a daily basis and the snow looks ok, although below average.

mappy says to take a95 to garmish then small roads till you hit the inntal autobahn??? what do you think?

|||

It%26#39;s the shortest way, but not sure about being the quickest. If the weather conditions are bad I would strongly advise all relevent equipment, i.e winter tyres, chains. Look at Munich to Innsbruck then down the Inntal to Lech! If it is a weekend it will be busy all routes!

It%26#39;s snowing at the moment in Lech, so that%26#39;s a blessing! I am sure you will have good conditions and an excellent time.

Have fun!

hi teajay...am now favouring the a96 via Bregenz - have looked at a good map and seems to me has the safest route ie motorway most of the way - we will be there this Thursday so should avoid the weekend traffic...what do you think? am worried that if we go via Innnsbruck that the pass may be closed due to the snow?

any more guidance welcomed...merry christmas...

Hi

I think that is a good bet. The weather is forecast to clear up and become brighter late wednesday afternoon, so the roads should be clear. It%26#39;s only the road up to Lech from the Inntal! Look out for LINDAU A96 from the airport as it is easy to miss, speaks the voice of experience?? There are a few turn offs onto different motorways, then onto an A road for 20 mins (the 471 passed Furstenfeldbruck to A96 at Inning) then it%26#39;s motorway all the way round.

You might want to buy a vignette at the german/austrian border at the Pfander tunnel. It%26#39;s an austrian motorway tax and it costs about 8 euros for a 10 day ticket which is better than a 1000+ euro fine if they catch you!

Have a great holiday and good skiing!

Merry christmas

Teajay.

thanks for all the good advice, much appreciated - we are staying at the hotel monzabon in Lech and I have just read the most terrible review of it, recently posted, but from people staying over last xmas - they call it Faulty Towers in Lech!!! do you know of the hotel? is it that bad? i am getting concerned!!!

We went to Kitzbuhel last xmas and had a great time, I%26#39;m worried we made the wrong decision with Lech

thanks

No, don%26#39;t know of that hotel. We stay in Lech regularly We live in Lindau (so you%26#39;ll pass by!) and always at the Pension Schranz. It is ski to door, large rooms, wellness center, clean %26amp; friendly and peacefully quiet. I wouldn%26#39;t have thought there were many bad places in Lech! Is it only B%26amp;B or half-pension.

You should enjoy the skiing. We have been to nearly all the resorts in Austria %26amp; Lech is my favorite. The ski routes from Lech to Zuers then Zug and back to Lech are lovely for a leisurely day and eating lunch at Oberlech on sunny days is a must! Of course you%26#39;ve got St. Anton on the same pass and that is a great day for intermediates on %26amp; off piste skiing. You can take a drive out to Sonnenkopf, which is also on the same pass.

I wouldn%26#39;t let someone else%26#39;s opinion put you off! And anyway, try not to let it spoil your hols. Put it down to part of the experience and move somewhere else if it is that bad! There is usually spare rooms! In my opinion, the skiing is fab and I do like the village. It has a certain sparkle!

I take this trip every winter, and go through Innsbruck. The other routes on smaller roads have been closed at times by snow. Even the route through Innsbruck can be maddeningly slow on a Saturday. The worst part of the trip is the last 20km from St. Anton to Lech--very narrow and winding old road, competing for space with busses.

I can%26#39;t imagine a %26quot;bad%26quot; hotel in Lech. The whole town is pretty upscale. Be sure you get parking through the hotel. There aren%26#39;t enough spaces in the town when things get busy.

Have a great time. I%26#39;ll be back the first of March!
