Hi,
We are in the early stages of planning our first trip to Austria for 1-2 weeks in Aug/Sept of this year. We both love mountain scenery and walking in the Alps but we don%26#39;t know which area in Austria would be the best to visit. We hope to base ourselves in one place and get around by train/bus so somewhere with spectacular scenery, different walking trails and possibly other interesting day trips or activities all within easy travelling distance of our base would be great. We went to the Jungfrau region in Switzerland and loved it - we stayed in Interlaken and got train trips to different villages and walking trails every day and there was the spectacular trip up the Jungfrau as well. Somewhere similar in Austria would be great! Any advice gratefully received - as I said we are in the very early planning stages so we are open to any suggestions!
Thanks!

How about the Hochkoenig mountain range, for somewhere a bit different and far from the madding crowds. Some pretty villages, great walks.Bus from Muehlbach to Bischofshofen for train to loads of places for day trips. Also cheap flights to salzburg from UK.

Hi, thanks for that - we will definitely look into it! I know there are cheap flights from the UK but we are considering going by train and stopping off in a couple of places somewhere in Germany on the way. Munich will probably be one of them as it sounds quite easy to get a train to Austria from there and we would like to visit Munich. We%26#39;ve been to Switzerland for the last couple of years and decided we should try Austria this year. We love high mountain scenery and hiking (only day hikes though), cable car rides, scenic train/bus trips etc. We had a chance to try white water rafting in the Canadian Rockies last year as well which was excellent - I read something about white water rafting in Austria - does anyone know where that would be?

Have you considered Mayrhofen in the Zillertal Valley. We have visited there lots and find it great for walking-both in the valley and on the mountains. Excellent gondola and cable car systems BUT the great thing is there are other valleys which run off the zillertal for walking. The local bus and train network will get you there.Make sure you purchase a %26quot;Zillertal Card %26quot; which gives you unlimited bus/train usage each day.It also allows one trip up and down the mountains each day.In 2006 a card for 6 days cost around 40 euros if my memory serves me right!!
As for days trips you can visit Innsbruck by train and in the village you can book trips by coach to a variety of places we enjoyed a trip to the Grossglockner the scenery was amazing.

Hi,
My friend and I flew to Innsbruck and then took a bus to the Stubai Valley.....only 20 mins away. We stayed in an excellent hotel for 7 days, Hotel Auenhof and did lots of walks from there. The hotel%26#39;s owner is a mountain guide and leads hikes daily although we preferred to do our own. Helen his wife also does morning nordic walks. THe food, scenery and hiking were fantastic. Ican%26#39;t recommend it enough.

We have been ski-ing the Voralberg region for the last 20 years and have always talked about going back there in the Summer. Try www.alpenregion.at and see if you like the look of things. We get there by flight to Zurich and then taxi onwards but you can pick up a train at Zurich or try the Arlberg Express coach. A hire car would make life easy. Enjoy.

Try Zell am see there are plenty of walks in the surrounding areas as well as good bus and train links to other parts of Austria, but I guess once you get to Zell you will not want to travel far.It beautiful
