Resort near Salzburg

My wife and I are going to spend Christmas 2007 in Salzburg, and then we hope to find a small, wonderful place in the mountains to spend a week cross country and downhill skiing, We%26#39;re looking for a place that has good food, relaxing atmosphere, perhaps some other outdoor activities, etc. Anybody have recommendations?

Are you planning to have a car? If so, you might want to look into the Peternhof, a resort between Reit im Winkel and Koessen, a couple of hours drive from Salzburg.

Thanks. For the type of place we%26#39;re looking for, my guess is that a car will be essential. I%26#39;d reall like to find a small, out of the way place where we can relax and avoid crowds.

christmas really isnt a good time to avoid crowds in skiing resorts. christmas holidays in Europe start December 21 and go through January 06 - so if you can avoid these 2 weeks, you also avoid crowds. There are a lot of nice skiing resorts around salzburg, but you should select one with higher altitude - the alps had quite some snow problems this winter and who knows what happens next year. Zell am See / Kaprun would be a good choice - there%26#39;s a glacier (Kitzsteinhorn) and a lake where you can do cross country around.

I too would recommend Zell or Kaprun. Easily accessible by train from Salzburg and well equipped for the ski season.

Thanks MadMAx and LizR. I%26#39;ll check out Zell?Kaprun right away. We%26#39;re also looking at Leutasch, which is quite a bit farther west, near Seefeld.

You would love Leutasch. We have been to Seefeld 5 times and always took a day trip there by bus. It has great accomodations and restaurants. Much smaller than Seefeld but you would have peace and quiet. They have wonderful cross country ski trails and many walking trails and there is a very nice indoor pool/spa.
