General Vienna/Austria/Switzerland Question

Hi,

I have booked 3 Days in Vienna which doesnt even sound like enough after reading this forum. I have a general question and need some advice.

After my 3 days in Vienna, we(2 of us) have 7 Days to get to Florence, Italy. I was thinking of spending some time in Lucerne in Switzerland, Innsbrook, and Salzburg. Hiring a car is no problem, but Ill probably do just rains if I%26#39;m going to the big cities. We are going in the last week in May, and could afford roughly 100 euros/night for sleeping.

What would you recommend that we do for those 7 days. I naturally just though of moving west and then catching a train to florence, but airports are too. I was even thinking of Budapest for a couple days? We love small towns too - nightlife isnt too big an issue for us we just want the best experience. We will be coming from Krakow and Prague.

I know its a really open ended question. But all these places look so great that im having difficulty deciding. Maybe I should just %26quot;wing%26quot; it when im there? Any advice is much appreciated.!

%26quot;probably just take trains%26quot;...typo

With limited time , I would not go to Innsbrook or Lucerne.

Perhaps you would want to add 2 days to your stay in Vienna- using one for more Vienna sights and one for a day trip to Budapest by train-( or perhaps 2 in Budapest)

You will find better choices for 100 euro per night accomdation in the country.

I would rent a car in Vienna for the trip to Salzbzrg.

Take your time to visit the beautiful Wachau valley of the Danube River including a visit to Melk Abbey.

Many beautiful villages in this area with a long history and excelent and moderate priced accomodations. good food and some of the best white wine too.

The towns of Spitz, Weissenkirchen, Durnstein offer nice inns with views of the Danube.

Perhaps a night or two n the Salzkammergut - lake region of Salzburg.

The towns there often mentioned on this site- beautiful

Then on to Salzburg- return the rental car and enjoy remaining days touring Salzburg before a train to Florence.

Your time of travel- the end of May means not so many tourists and really no need for hotel reservations- a good time to %26quot; wing it%26quot; Great way to see these places.

Just my idea of an enjoyable week!

Hi Andy,

I agree with Vertical you should skip Innsbruck and Lucerne because they will break up your journey which could otherwise be an overnight train from Austria to Italy.

Vienna is full of sights to see and things to do, seriously at least 4 days. While Vertical%26#39;s various recommendations are all great small towns, they further complicate your travel plan. My suggestion is to spend a day in Melk which is more or less on the way to Salzburg. Melk Abbey is a must see sight for its stunning rococo Baroque architecture.

Salzburg certainly provides the feel of a town with plenty to see and do in and around the town (approx. 160,000 population). The Salzkammergut is the picture perfect lake and mountain region surrounding Salzburg.

If you are short of time to go around, why not join either Panorama%26#39;s or Bob%26#39;s tour (google both sites) in Salzburg? The Sound of Music tour will bring you to picturesque lake town in Salzkammergut and there is the famous Eagle%26#39;s Nest Tour.

hi!

If you are interested in the country itself - and if you can effort to hire a car - why don%26#39;t you just cross the country (Austria) via small roads - they are in a good condition and you are most likely see a lot of this beautiful nature (Salzkammergut, Ennstal in Styria, Graz is a nice city as well, southers part of styria with its wine yards, carinthia with its lakes)- I don%26#39;t see a problem in finding private accomodation spontaneously - just take a map of Austria and here we go!

if you just need to trevale straight to florence i also would suggest the train - best way to travel this distance!!

have a nice stay!

Thank you ilo, Alex, and Vertical. I appreciate the great advice. We are going to get a car in Vienna and just take our time working our way to Salzburg. Ill get a good map and take this post with me. Our trip isn%26#39;t until May, but ill post my experiences as soon as I get home!

Thank you again for your time and recommendations

Andycpa-

I think your choice to take a car and take your time to Salzburg is a good one.

i do not think Alex, posting above, understands my post regarding the small towns of Dürnstein, Spitz , Weissenkirchen on the way to Melk. Obviously , he does not know the beauty of these villages , views of the Danube ( not Blue but still nice) their wineries, wine gardens, fine food, the possibility of fine lodging or other things they offer or how near they are to each other- about 15-20 minutes driving time. In addition, you can take a very scenic boat trip on the Danube between all of them too.

for boat info

www.ddsg.blue.danube.at

Accomodations in the towns mentioned above offer much better choices ,at better prices ,than those in Melk. Any would make a good base to tour this region. Even just one overnight

I do not suggest that they should be visited as separate places but as a destination together. It does not complicate travel plans but only adds to your vacation opportunities.

If you take the A-22 route from Vienna ,then on to S-5 you must go through Durnstein, Weissenkirchen, Spitz then to Melk on the same road. Total driving time Vienna - Melk on these roads without stopping 1 1/2 hours +-

Much better in my opinion than the A-1 autobahn ,Vienna- Melk with heavy traffic , and often congestion due to autobahn re-construction, with little scenic value.
