My husband, son, and I are planning a trip to Salzburg in Sept. I am trying to find a mid range priced hotel and am feeling very overwhelmed by the selections. We are arriving on the train from Munich and will be spending 3 nights in Salzburg. I think it would probably be convenient to be fairly close to the train station, but if we do stay near the station is that a distance from the city and the sites of the city we may want to visit. Any suggestions anyone may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

I%26#39;m sure one of these days I%26#39;ll get my hands slapped for saying this but the area around the train station is not all that nice. I would not stay around there if I were you. Salzburg is not a large city so no matter where you decide to stay the station would only be a short taxi ride away. Try and find a hotel closer to the old city or preferably in the old city itself. The attractions are all close together so going from place to place is easy. You have lots of time to choose a really nice hotel. September is usually wonderful in Salzburg. The festival will have finished but there will still be lots of exciting things going on. We go every September for a week and have always had hot, sunny weather.

No hand-slapping here! I fully concur with Liz that the area around the station is just the tiniest bit skanky ... and actually rather lacking in amenities (sure there are some supermarkets but not much choice for restaurants).
Salzburg IS small and I think you will enjoy yourself a whole lot more if you are based in a more welcoming area. It is really easy and quick to get from the station into town by taxi or bus, and that is where you will be wanting to spend your days and evenings rather than around the station.
I don%26#39;t know what your hotel budget is but here are some hotel recommendations from me that would provide a convenient base for a short trip:
Budget:
Hotel am Dom (right in the centre, within spitting distance of the cathedral) I%26#39;ve not stayed here but it looks like good, budget-level accommodation
Pension Chiemsee (a short walk from the cathedral) is a real bargain mostly because there are no lifts in the 14th century building so you need a strong man to tote your luggage (or you will be reduced to packing on the floor of reception like I did). Very basic, but clean and good location, and good bathrooms. Quite a few wine bars in the area so noisy in summer
Midrange (3 star?)
Weisse Taube (very close to the centre, just off Mozartplatz) is very pleasant with helpful staff. The bathrooms can be a bit pokey but the rooms are comfy (good beds) and well equipped.
(3 star plus)
Goldene Ente (very cute location in tiny pedestrianized street right in the centre) has been recommended to me by fastidious friends, tho I have never stayed there myself. Very nice restaurant.
(4 star)
Gablerbrau (on the other side of the river, but still very close to the old town - 5 mins walk to the cathedral) is my favourite hotel in Salzburg - gorgeous bathrooms and huge breakfasts and though not right in the old town, has lots of nice restaurants and cafes right at hand. Very helpful staff.
Hotel Elefant (right in the centre) has a slightly gloomy air like a home for convalescents but it is swish all the same with all mod cons and a good (though increasingly too health-conscious) restaurant attached. One of the few hotels with air conditioning, tho I think you pay a surcharge for it! Probably not needed in September anyway :)
(5 star) I never aspire to, but if you wanted to push the boat out I woudl prefer the Bristol or the Goldener Hirsch (on the Getreidegasse) to snooty Sacher with their stale cake!
Hope that helps! If you want to know more about any particular hotel, websites etc, give me a shout.

Thank you all for your help! I%26#39;m sure I will be asking for more!!

I have a friend checking into the Elefant (Best Western) today. She%26#39;s going to give me a good report on that when she gets home. It is very centrally located in the Old City. I%26#39;ll post up her thoughts in due course.

Roley%26#39;s tip for nethotels.com is very useful. The rates are good and they offer multiple room bookings. I just booked the Gablerbräu on it :-)
Ta!

Glad to be of help! I think nethotels.com is good because it is very comprehensive and seems to give a pretty complete list of what%26#39;s available on any given date - plus the rates are competitive. It%26#39;s one of the sites I always check when booking my trips (even if I then go book the hotel direct!)
I hope you like the Gablerbräu! It%26#39;s one of my favourites in Salzburg - very handy location, nice rooms (and plush bathrooms), and a lavish brekky. The restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel is pleasant and there are plenty of others to choose from close by.
