Advice on Salzburg/Saalfelden

This is a wonderful forum and saves a lot of mysteries.

Thanks to all in advance for all bits of help

We are two couples and a kid planning a week long vacation(first timers in Europe) in the alpine centre near Saalfelden in the 2nd week of February. Is it advisable to hire a car and explore the nearby cities like Munich and Salzburg(considering the weather - would it be too snowy to drive?)

We plan to fly to vienna spent 2days(one night), then travel by train to either salzburg or saalfelden(2 days), then go to munich for a couple of days(one night) and then back to saalfelden and then back to vienna and fly back. Do you think 4 days in saalfelden is worth seeing something(other than skiing). Are there any other picturesque towns nearby saalfelden that we can make day trips and still enjoy?

i dont know if my time proportion is even nearly right.

Once again thanks for all your help.

hallstatt. town/village, a little south and east of salzburg

between vienna and salzburg you could visit cesky krumlov (czech republic) and maybe linz?

I think they do a good job of clearing the roads so driving might be an option, but you might have to use snow chains in resorts, so make sure you know how to put them on

I%26#39;ve lived in Vienna for three years and know Austria pretty well. I think your timing sounds ok although it does seem you are trying to cram a lot in. Two days in Vienna should be fine at that time of year (it will very cold so there%26#39;s less to do than in summer!). You might want to go to the opera or ice skating at the Rathaus.

I don%26#39;t think Linz has much to offer so I%26#39;d skip that and head straight for Salzburg. Spend at least one day in the city and then head out to Saalfelden or any one of the many beautiful mountain resorts in the south of the region: places like Bad Gastein, Zell am Zee, and especially Hallstatt. There are many non-skiing activities to do around the Dachstein and Hochkoenig mountain ranges.

To explore the areas around Saalfelden you really would need a car. All main roads will be fine. Your hire car should have winter tyres that will cope with most roads. Only on very small/steep roads does one have to use chains (should also be provided).

Of course, driving to Munich won%26#39;t be a problem and as it%26#39;s not too far (1 1/2 hours) you should be able to squeeze it in.

Nonsense of course. Linz has enough to offer for a few days.

It has a beautiful old town, interesting museums and theatres

and is a great place for shopping.

In my opinion a very beautiful and interesting city.

And it will be the European Capital of Culture in 2009 by the way.
