2 days in Vienna

I am traveling in a group of 12 and we have several questions!

We are interested in a hotel in/near the inner city and would like to have rooms that accomodate groups of 4. Any suggestions??

We will be arriving by train from Dresden. Could anyone tell me where the train station is in relation to the inner city??

I have read about the Vienna Card. Is it worth getting?

We are a mixed group with a few children. Does anyone have a suggestion about restaurants? Also, what are the wine taverns I have read about?

Only one more question, I promise!

We are thinking of taking an overnight train to Berlin at the end of our stay. Can anyone help to understand how the night/sleeper trains work?

Thanks!

Hi anvittraveler,

With regards to hotels in inner city (Inner Stadt) , please go through the Vienna forum as most recent posts have been about central hotels from luxury to cheap. I will mention a few here that I have stayed or know of:

1.) Kaiserin Elisabeth (3* close of the heart of city centre)

2.) K+K Hotel Maria Theresia (3* star 5 minutes walk to city center)

3.) Hotel Konig Von Ungarn (3* with apartment option in city center)

The station of arrival in Vienna from Dresden is Westbahnhof (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westbahnhof,_Vienna). There is U3 %26amp; U6 line.

The following is the most comprehensive official site for Vienna :

Vienna%26#39;s transport is one of the best and most organised in Europe. Once you see the metro map and understand the colour coded lines and end stations, you will be able to use metro or the tram (street car) easily.

Vienna Card is worth it if you are going to visit a number of museums. Even with it, the entrance is not free but discounted between 15-25%. Vienna museums are pricey (8-15 euro) and sometimes getting a museum pass for two affiliated museums give you saving.

Otherwise, just buy the metro pass (24 %26amp; 72 hours), check for group %26amp; child discount at station. If you stay within the city center, you don%26#39;t even need to use metro or tram at all as most historic sites are within or around the inner city. Only Schronbrunn Palace requires a metro ride. Note the following map, the circled part is where you can change to tram (street car).

(Don%26#39;t be intimidated by the tram map as the inner city tram is at the center of the map served by Tram 1 , 2 and D among others.

Restaurants recommendation ? Sorry, you have to ask local experts. There is a post on Heurigen in Vienna Forum from local expert as I followed travel guide (Grinzing) which turned out to be tourist trap.

The Austrian Rail web site provides fares and time table. For night train, a minimum of 1 day advance booking is advisable. You can do it when you arrive at Westbahnhof from Dresden or buy it before departure from Dresden (main station only). Remember to book non smoking cabin or seats if you prefer as I notice many Americans complaining about the ubiquitous smoking sections on Europe trains.

Have a nice trip!
