We are travelling to Salzburg at the end of this week for a city break . We want to do a SOM tour but can anyone recommend which one to do Bob%26#39;s or Panorama%26#39;s Tour.
Also, is it feasible to do Munich in a day by train, obviously just seeing the main attractions. Can you buy the tickets at the train station on the day of travel, without booking? Which website for a timetable?
Any advice greatly appreacited.

Hi! I took the tour about 7 years ago. I wouldn%26#39;t be able to swear to it, but I believe I took Bob%26#39;s tour (we took a big yellow van). I speak conversational German but did not need to use it in the least as our tour guide spoke wonderful English. We saw all the sights - did not feel rushed at all.
I have not take the train from Salzburg to Munich, but I can recommend the best train website I have ever used - it is Austrian and extremely comprehensive (at least based on my experience). It is www.oebb.at.
Enjoy Salzburg - it is beautiful!

Hi YDNIB,
It is hard to say which tour is better, I have personally tried only Panorama and agreed with what others rave about it and notice what may be wrong with Bob%26#39;s tour.
Basically, it depends on your preference, Panorama does coach tours where as Bob uses a van to do the tour. If you like small group of 6-8 people, Bob is definitely the choice. If you enjoy company of more people when singing or humming to soundtracks of SOM, Panorama may turn out to be more fun.
The latter has humorous guide but die hard fans of SOM may feel offended by his constant jokes about the movie itself like most Austrians who don%26#39;t care about the movie. People have complained some guides in Bob%26#39;s tour were dull or seemed uninterested with the job. Most of them must be sick of doing the tour unless the guide starts to make jokes with travelers.
Note that Bob tour%26#39;s itinerary starts with Salzburg city tour whereas Panorama tour does not walk through the city center.
If you have not read the reviews, here they are:
tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g190441-d7…
Note that both tours will not stop or walk through all locations as some reviewers have complained as private villa and palace is not accessible to tourists.
The given web site is Austrian official rail site so you can check the schedules and buy the ticket at the counter (buying on board costs extra!). The journey takes over 1 1/2, take IC (intercity) or EC trains which are faster and more modern. The journey between the two cities is already worth the trip.
Munich%26#39;s center is the town hall (Rathaus), you can walk from train station to Karlsplatz which pedestrianized and where most attractions are. However being rebuilt after WW2 also means that the streets in Munich are broad and there are a lot of walking to cover few sights or you can take the metro (U bahn). Salzburg is wonderfully compact.
You can do a day trip to Munich if you don%26#39;t intend to spend much time in museums. You can relax in the vast English garden (Englischer Garten) which involves also half an hour walk from the town hall. The following is the map and sightseeing route.

We took Bob%26#39;s Tours the day after Christmas because we took the Silent Night tour and loved it and our driver Bruno. There were 2 vans for Silent Night and the other guide was Sandy from Scotland, who lives in Salzburg. Bruno spoke perfect English and was a lot of fun. He is a Salzburger. I was very happy they include the city tour as he pointed out various fountains where they sang, the bus stop used when Maria left the Abby , the bridge where they sang crossing the river, etc. - all these are city locations and it was very informative. I am an avid SOM fan but my hubby doesn%26#39;t like coach tours so we did Bobs and we both loved it.
