kaprun or mayrhofen

Just back from a wonderful holiday in Rauris. We had enough snow as we were beginners but I want to return same time next year and think a glacier resort would be safer.Am Icorrect? We are a family of 6 ,3 teenagers but not into raucous nightlife. We want a 4star hotel, easy access to the slopes and a nice village atmosphere.Any help would be appreciated thanks

I have never been a fan of Kaprun or the glacier.

In most ski seasons , a nearby glacier is not needed or wanted. Usually snow enough in most resorts and during a regular season , glaciers get very cold and windy this time of year- not much fun.

Most places today have good snow making capibilities and only need cold temperatures to provide good skiing.

If a glacier is needed for skiing - everyone has the same idea from nearby and skiing involves long lines just to reach higher terrain- then you wait again to go up again,

Mayrhofen is not far from Hintertux glacier -with its valley station and end station both higher than Kaprun better conditions and a much larger skiable area

Mayrhofen is in the middle of the Ziller Valley- with a ski pass available for most all lifts in that valley ( hundreds). It has a series of good ski schools and now the biggest cable car in Austria.

Together with the nearby villages of Finkenberg , Hippach and Lanersbach - a fantastic ski circus with all levels of skiing- much more easy blue runs than Rauris I think.

Much more than Kaprun.

Much to do in the town and surroundings too.

Easy access from Innsbruck Airport.

Many english speaking guests, thus many ski instructers hotel and restaurant staff speak english

The Sport Hotel Stock in Finkenberg ( 4 stars) is only a short walk 150 meters to a lift to the top of the mountain. A very nice family - run hotel.

Many other good hotels available in Mayrhofen of all stars and prices.

Excelent snowmaking and even small ponds at high elevations to insure much water if needed.

We have been to Kaprun several times, it is a nice resort quite spread out, fairly quite.Easy access to zell am see and shutdorf, the glacier is excellent , wide slopes, suit all abilities, good runs, on a sunny day it is fantastic. We stayed at the hotel Orgler last time a 4star which was very good, excellent food and a good lounge with open fire. Walking distance to Kaprun slopes, bus stop outside for anywhere else.
