Salzburg First Timer

This goes out to all you seasoned travellers out there. My partner and I are visiting Salzburg for the first time at the end of January for 3 nights and have narrowed down the choice of hotels to 3. Sooo many to choose from and I%26#39;m sure I have missed many. However, is anyone able to offer any final thoughts on any of the following: Gablerbrau; Bayrischer Hof Hotel; Achat Plaza Zum Hirschen. Not that it ought to make any difference but we are a gay male couple.

Hi Guys

I%26#39;ve never stayed at any of these hotels so my comments are purely on their location. The Gablerbrau is on Linzergasse and therefore closer to the Old City and a much nicer location than the other two. Linzergasse leads straight down to the bridge and into the main tourist area, with all the sights. I hope someone else can advise you further.

I often stay at the Gablerbräu when I%26#39;m in Salzburg and I would recommend it highly (I%26#39;m booked to go there in August which I guess is putting my money where my mouth is!) As Liz says, it%26#39;s in a much better location than the other two, on the Linzergasse, just over the river from the old town (5 mins stroll to the cathedral) The other two are nearish the station, a slightly seedy area with few amenities for visitors.

The Gablerbräu itself is very clean with particularly good bathrooms (very modern for Europe) and lavish breakfasts. I%26#39;ve found the staff helpful and efficient.

I particularly like the Gabler because it is close to some of my favourite restaurants and cafes (a foodie pub called Zum Fidelen Affen just across the way, Cafe Habakuk with fantastic cakes a little way up the Linzergasse, and the trendy Stein Terasse cafe bar in the Hotel Stein at the foot of the Linzergasse on the river quay. You will be well fed and watered in that area, unlike the pricey old town!

Hi UKPP,

Just to give some queer tips for your trip to Salzburg. People are generally very friendly in Salzburg and you should not be treated differently as long as you do not flaunt your orientation and show intimacy in public.

As you may know, %26quot;alternative%26quot; scene in Austria is rather subdue and Salzburg has just one or two such bars.

Recommending you to join Panorama%26#39;s Sound Of Music Tour as the tour guide is %26quot;flamboyant%26quot; and humorous. This is a great tour to enjoy scenic places around Salzburg and singing/humming to SOM soundtracks.
