Hi
We are looking at booking my parents a trip to Salzburg for their upcoming Ruby Wedding Anniversary. They have been to Austria previously and to Salzburg for the day but that is all. My questions are:-
Will 4 days be too long to spend in the one city?
Mum is a great fan of the Sound of Music, which bus tour is the best and takes in the most attractions out of the city? I cannot decide whether Bobs or Panorama is the best based on reviews from mid last year on this site.
Does anyone else have any other recommendations for day coach tours/things to occupy them?
What will the weather be like mid March?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I took my mum to Salzburg a couple of summers back for three days and had to prise her away with a pair of pliers at the end - she wasn%26#39;t ready to leave! There is plenty to do - but to me it is an %26quot;outdoors%26quot; kind of city - most of the best attractions are the outdoorsy kind - like the fortress (my mum really enjoyed the fascinating tour of that) - walking around the Moenschberg - and the gardens at Hellbrunn where we lolled in the sun eating ices. Her favourite part was drinking beer in the terrace cafe of the Stein Hotel ...!
I don%26#39;t know what the weather will be like in March - and it%26#39;s even harder to predict this year because the weather patterns are so odd. But I am guessing it could be very cold and quite snowy and not yet very springlike. That may confine your parents mostly to indoor activities - the fortress tour, tour of Hellbrunn palace and the Mozart houses (if of interest) may occupy some time.
Daytrips are a possibility - a trip to Berchtesgaden if weather permits, and it is possible to go to Munich for the day (about 2 hrs by train, I believe).
I haven%26#39;t been on the Sound of Music tours so can%26#39;t give any advice there.
Generally speaking, I go to Salzburg usually between May-September because I think it%26#39;s at its best in the height of summer ... in March, I prefer to go to Vienna for the greater range of amusements it offers in bad weather. I don%26#39;t know if your parents have been there, or that might suit as an alternative destination?
Not much help, I%26#39;m afraid, but something for a start!

Thanks for the advice, it would have to be Salzburg purely for my mums love of the sound of music.
Are coach trips possible to organise when they arrive or should we do it for them in advance? (thats if we book the trip)
Am a little worried about how cold the weather will be, but I guess anywhere in Europe could be similar.
Many thanks again

Salzburg is very compact and very easy to get around. I personally think one full day is enough within the city. If they have 4 days, I highly recommend that you plan at least 2 full day trips out of Salzburg.
