Hi - we are planning on using Salzburg as a base and travelling to Vienna for one day y train - I have had a look at the websites recommended by other tripadvisor posters (thank you!) - question is - do we need to book train tickets before we leave UK or will we be Ok to go to the train station when we arrive in Salzburg? Wasn%26#39;t sure if the rail system is the same as the UK where the further in advance you buy the tickets the cheaper it is (allegedly!!)
Thanks for any advice

Nope, you can roll up on the day and buy your ticket at the station and it costs exactly the same as if you buy in advance (unlike the rip-off British system!) And a return is twice the single fare - you just pay a bog standard per-kilometer price - simplicity itself!
I sometimes buy my tix using the self-print facility on the OEBB website which works well (provided you have rudimentary German) but it%26#39;s only if I imagine I will be in a big hurry/flap when I get to the station - it doesn%26#39;t save me any money buying in advance (and is less flexible because the self-print ticket is only valid on the day you choose, unlike a regular ticket).
Hope that helps!
