Help for first time in Salzburg please.

We are coming to Salzburg on 4 feb until 7 feb 2007. I have looked at the postings on tripadvisor and now don%26#39;t which to choose as everything looks unmissable. We will be using public transport and staying at the Sheraton.

apart from time to see salzburg itself which do you recommend of the following options

Sound of Music tour

Train to Zell am See

Bus to Berchtesgaden and then on to Eagle%26#39;s nest

or anything else.

I%26#39;ve never neen skiing and don%26#39;t really want to but I%26#39;d love to see lots of snow and spectacular scenery and use the cable cars and also keen to see interesting and pretty towns.

many thanks

Elsewhere in the forum Liz has talked about her trip up the Untersberg by cable car, which might give you the chance to see some snow and scenery, quite close to Salzburg. You can reach the Untersberg on Bus 25 from the city centre (same bus you take to reach Hellbrunn).

This website has information about the cablecar

Zell am See and Berchtesgaden are quite long trips so I would be inclined to stick to the shorter journey to Untersberg (which has the advantage you don%26#39;t have to plan too much in advance but can just hop on the bus and go when the weather looks good).

I%26#39;ve not done the Sound of Music tour but if you were interested, that might be another way to do some sightseeing outside Salzburg proper with minimal effort (you can tell I am a lazy traveller!)

Hope that helps as a start,

Untersberg by cable car (Euro 18) is free if you have Salzburg card.

Hi Maxiewaxie,

During your time of visit, there should be snow around the city and the Salzkammergut area. I reckon you should skip Zell Am See which is more for skiing but you can still enjoy its setting on the lake. The train journey from Salzburg is 1 hour away.

Take the Sound of Music Tour as it will bring you through scenic drive in the Salzkammergut area which was featured in S.O.M. I have tried Panaroma Tour which can be arranged by hotels one day before. This is a coach tour, so expect 20-30 people but it can be fun if you get to chat with people. For more of a priavte tour of 8 people or less, try the Bob%26#39;s Tour which is recommended by other TA members.

You can organise the Berchtesgaden tour with Bob%26#39;s tour as well.

Hi maxiewaxie,

I just got back from Salzburg with my family and we had a great time! There was no snow though, which was too bad. Hopefully there will be plenty for your visit in February! We did the SOM tour with Bob%26#39;s tours and honestly I was not very impressed. Our guide was quite unenthusiastic and not terribly informative, but yes on the otherhand we did go a bit outside Salzburg to see St. Gilgen, a lovely little village where Mozart%26#39;s mother was born. Maybe consider doing a Panorama SOM tour instead? We did the salt mine tour which also takes you to Berchtesgaden with Panorama and LOVED it! The tour guide was fascinating and very funny, and the salt mine was a very cool experience, especially if you have kids. They put you in mining outfits, you get to ride a mine cart down into the mine, and there%26#39;s a couple of slides once you%26#39;re down in there. And the mine itself is pretty interesting. I don%26#39;t think Eagle%26#39;s nest will be open in February because of snow and ice on the road up to it, but you can check on that. Oh in Salzburg itself: don%26#39;t miss the cemetary at St. Peter%26#39;s church! It%26#39;s like nothing I%26#39;d ever seen. The Mozart dinner was great too! Enjoy your trip, Salzburg is a gem!

The Eagle%26#39;s Nest at Berchtesgaden will not be open during the time of you planned visit. www.kehlsteinhaus.de/en/anfahrt/index.php…

hi maxiewaxie,

I was in Salzburg for the first time last year and am due to return this summer.

The cable car at untersberg would i think be the perfect option for you. The scenery is amazing but this trip can easily be done in a single morning or afternoon - less if you take the car up and then almost straight back down.

I also must reccommend the Salzburg Card- it offers great discounts including this cable car trip, free public transoprt and many of the sound of music sights too, if you are interested.

Last year we considered the Sound of Music tour , but decided it was not worth it but covered most of the main sights ourselfs and we only had 3 days in Salz.

enjoy your trip.
