We will be in Austria for 5 days/4 nights in early July and we are trying to decide how to spend the time between the 2 cities.
Some posts recommend more time in Vienna with less in Salzburg. We would like to do some sightseeing but enjoy relaxing, listening to classical music and absorbing the ambience.
Any recommendations would be very helpful
TIA

Much more to do in Vienna .
I would recommend 3 days Vienna - 2 Salzburg
with 3 nights in Vienna - 1 in Salzburg.
In Vienna - in addition to sightseeing
Relaxing in the many outdoor cafes- food and wine in one of the many Heurigers ( wine taverns ) both situations absorbing the ambiance-
great choice of music .
Train Vienna- Salzburg in less than 3 hours.

Vertical,
Thank you very much for the response.
We are going for our 10th wedding anniversary and we plan to stay in Grand Hotel Wein (for Vienna) and the Sacher (for Salzburg). What do you think about these choices? I know they are supposed to be nice but there are many choices and if there are others that you would recommend over these 2, I would love to know.
thanks again

Vienna was beautiful, but if I had to do it again I would spend more time in Salzburg. We really liked to more intimate feel of the smaller city.

Hi eyeopener,
I love both cities. However, Vienna definitely warrants longer stay if you are to do sightseeing, dine in wide variety of restaurants and attend concerts.
To spend a romantic evening, you can visit the wine taverns around Vienna which are less than 1 hour away on public transportation. Vienna is known as the only capital city with winery within its vicinity.
Salzburg is beautiful and very laid back, it is most beautiful during winter months with snow capped mountains visible along the riverside and its famous Christmas markets.
It feels more like a town than a city. The sightseeing within Salzburg can be done in 1 or 2 days as the old town is small. However, if you enjoy scenery and excursion, Salzburg offers endless options. The nearby Lake Town of Mondsee, St Gilgen and the stunning setting of Hallstat.

Eyeopener:
Regarding your hotel choices- both are very good in my opinion. In Vienna many choices of course but the Grand , I have never heard bad things about.
The Grand - very good location on the Ringstrasse -only a very short walk 2 mimnutes to the State Opera.
major public transport just at the corner
Subway U-1 and U-4 streetcars #1 # and D
Bus 3A too.
short walk to the Hofburg and major shopping
The hotel has good restaurants also.
Sacher in Salzburg perfect location on the river - a short walk to all things in the old city- good views depending on room location- this is still a family enterprise and their good management shows.
The Hotel is older but grand and well maintained.
Both places will hopefully add to a nice travel experience.

Thank you to everyone for their advice, we are really looking forward to this trip.
The wine excursions sound nice and we will definitely have to make time one evening.
