We are arriving in Munich and want to tour =highlights of austria in 8 days. Innsbruck, Salzburg and area, linz , and vienna as well as eagles nest. Can you sketch out a brief itinerary to help us get started?

When are you planning to travel? There are different things to see depending on the time of year, so it would help to know that when suggesting an itinerary.
It would also help to know what sort of things you like to do when you travel. You could just trek between the main Austrian cities but you might have a more enjoyable time if you focus on things that particularly interest you (and Austria has such a lot that way) eg. mountains, outdoor scenery etc - or historical sites, museums and galleries - or music - or personal interests and hobbies (for example Austria is a great place for railway buffs with all sorts of weird and wonderful steam trains).
Are there any things like that which hold a particular fascination for you?

Thanks for the prompt reply. We are travelling 7/17/07 to 7/25/07 (leaving from Munich)
We love history and outdoor scenary of the hills, mountains lakes and quiet little picturesque villages, especially medieval castles.A river ride on the danube would be nice. Does this help?

Hi,
You didn%26#39;t say if you needed to end your trip in Munich or elsewhere. For 8 days it seems like a lot in my opinion, but that%26#39;s me. Assuming your driving, I would suggest Munich to the Innsbruck area (2.5 hour drive), although I%26#39;d stay in Hall in Tirol (we%26#39;ve stayed here 3 times). Hall in Tirol ia a beautiful old town, surrounded by mountains, just 6 miles east of Innsbruck. I should say we don%26#39;t care for Innsbruck itself, as it%26#39;s too crowded, a lot of traffic and only a small pedestrian zone. Hall in Tirol actually has a larger pedestrian zone and is much nicer to walk around, IMO. From here I%26#39;d suggest basing in the Berchtesgaden, Germany area (another 2.5 hour drive) to see Salzburg. We stayed in Ramsau, Germany, which is a very pretty village surrounded by mountains and only a 30 to 40 minute drive to Salzburg. Within 15 minutes of Ramsau is Berchtesgaden (very nice old town), Konigssee (beautuful lake surrounded by mountains with boat trips) and Hintersee (a smaller lake with beautiful mountains around it). I%26#39;m sorry I can%26#39;t comment on Linz and Vienna, as we haven%26#39;t been to these places. I%26#39;l list some websites you may find useful.
Hall in Tirol/Innsbruck area:
www.reagionhall.at
www.badl.at (we stayed here 3 times, wonderful place)
www.schloss-tratzberg.at (Tratzberg Castle)
www.khm.at/system2E.html?/staticE/page17.html (Ambras Castle)
castles.org/castles/…Austria.htm
www.ramsau.com
www.mayringerlehen.de (here Oct. 2006 and loved it)
www.berchtesgadener-land.info
I hope this helps in some way.
