Hello.
I have been reading through the forums over the last few months and this has inspired me to book Vienna for our first Wedding Anniversary (so thank you). It will be our second visit to this beautiful city so we are very excited.
We are staying at the K+K Hotel Maria Theresia (Kirchberggasse 6)arriving on Friday 19th January and have booked to see Carmen at the Vorksoper on the 22nd January 2007. Can anybody tell me if this is far from the Hotel? We are getting dressed up as this will be our first time at the Opera but if I wear evening suit will I be overdressed? Obviously my Wife will also be getting dressed up so we don%26#39;t want to look out of place.
Finally, I have asked the Vienna tourist office to recommend a good restaurant near the Opera and they have said Restaurant Francesco (Wahringerstrabe 66-A-1090 Wien), has anybody any experiences of this and could you recommend it? I am open to suggestions as I really want to make this as romantic as possible.
Mank Thanks
Kind Regards
Paul

Not ceretain what you refer to as %26quot; evening suit%26quot; do you mean a tuxedo or known here as %26quot; Smoking%26quot; if so that is generally overdressed for the Volksoper- a normal suit and tie is enough.
From the kand K to the volksoper - walk to the Ring- take streetcar #! or D to Schottentor stop- take steps or escalator to lower level-
Take streetcar # 40, 41 or 42 to the Volksoper - total time maybe 20 -25 minutes from hotel.
It is not really that far from the hotel- easy ride by taxi too.7-10 euro perhaps.
I do not know the Francesco- but an Italian restaurant is not far from the Volksoper on Wahringer strasse- ( some side as the Volksoper perhaps 100 meters downhill-) if this is the place - it sounds correct by address- then it is not a great place OK-looking from outside - but never dined there.
For something really special - dine at Do %26amp; Co on Stephansplatz - take a taxi after the Opera- They serve until midnight - Opera probably over about 10.

Thank you Vertical.
As ever your advice is fantastic I will pass this onto my wife and she can choose an outfit appropriate now for the occasion. They have confirmed the opera will finish at 22.00 so we will try to book the Do %26amp; Co Stephansplatz when we first arrive in the City.
Really looking forward to the Vienna Ice Dream also as we were a week early 2 years ago.
Thank you so much for your help and also for all your posts in the forum, it makes fascinating reading.

For paulshannon:
Thank you for the kind words. Happy to see that you enjoyed Vienna and return.
I assume you refer to the ice rink and not the good Zanoni and Zanoni ice.
They will now begin to clear the area in front of the Rathaus and prepare for ice skating.
A nice rink is also just behind the Intercontinental Hotel- bigger.
If you have not been to the Volksoper before, you must check your coat- remember the exact area as the employees only retrieve coats from their numbered area- usually 2-3 people working in each area.
Taxis will be everywhere just outside the Volksoper following the performance- easy to catch one.
Enjoy your time in Vienna!

Thank you Vertical.
We are counting the days now until our flight. The problem is that there is so much to see and always so little time!
I am a hopeless ice skater but look forward to soaking the whole ambiance of the occasion. Th Rathaus (is this called the ice dream?)is the one we missed 2 years ago so look forward to seeing how they transform the front of this beautiful building. It looks magical in the pictures so we areally are excited, a few bruises won%26#39;t deter us!
Thank you again. Your help is really appreciated.
Kind regards and Best Wishes in the New Year.
