compare Maria Alm to St. Johann im Pongau for summer...

We are considering both locations for a trip in late July. We are looking for a %26quot;get away from it all%26quot; vacation with some activities and some just doing nothing. Appreciate lovely scenery. We have been to Vienna and Graz on two separate trips and are absolutely in love with Austria - took a train trip from Graz to Zurich and decided we really needed to stay in the villages we traveled through. Have time share opportunities in both villages - both Alpenland Sporthotels. Can anyone make recommendations?

In my opinion, Maria Alm is the nicer place.

A better %26quot; Get away from it all%26quot; smaller town - several other villages nearby like Dienten for a little variety if you want it.

Good walking trails .

Both have good scenery.

Still not far from Salzburg for a day trip-

compare by their websites

Some one asked about the Alpenland some months ago - pehaps you can find that site here.

We stayed in both Alpenland Sporthotels in May/June 2006. Each has it%26#39;s advantages. St Johann is a fair sized town with all the amenities ( very nice variety of restaurants and stores nearby). We had a one bedroom suite which had a rustic decor and was very spacious. St. Johann is closer to Salzburg and there are many attractions in the area. We enjoyed just walking around the the lovely town, getting coffee and croisants in the morning and eating pizza at the hotel restaurant in the evening.

Maria Alm is in a more remote and mountainous area. The town is very small and quaint with several nice restaurants. We were very fortunate to get one of the newly decorated apartments with a full kitchen. The other rooms are kind of small and the decor is a bit 70%26#39;s. Saalfelden is within 5 kms and has everything, MacDonalds, giant grocery stores and such. Maria Alm is close to Zell Am See and the Grossglockner which takes you on a beautiful drive to the highest peak in Austria.

Sorry I didn%26#39;t see this post sooner...if it%26#39;s not too late, I can give you more specifics. Just ask away!

Hi - It sounds like you are an Interval World member, too. I%26#39;m so excited to read your post on Maria Alm and St. Johann im Pongau. I just joined Interval World. How has it worked for you? I would love to go back to the Interlaken area of Switzerland, or Italy, but I never see any vacancies there. Maria Alm and St. Pongau seem to be readily available. Any additional info. on these areas would be welcome. Were they close enough to Halstadt and Salzburg for day trips? Also, if you have time, what have been some of your favorite exchanges through Interval? Have they been easy to make? Thanks in advance.

My family and I stayed in Maria Alm two years ago. We were booked for St. Johann, but it was under construction so we complained and they moved us to Maria Alm. We loved Maria Alm. The hiking is wonderful. The town is very quaint with lots of good places to eat. Berchesgarten and Salzburg are fairly close. Hallstat is not far either. I am going to St. Johann this fall for one week and also Grindelwald, Ch for one week through II. We have exchanged for the last seven years with II. We own two timeshares in Kauai. I will post a review after my stay in October about the two that we are booked at. The timeshare in southern Germany is really great too. It is a Sunterra resort at Alpenclub Schliersee. We had a one bedroom. It was basically a bedroom with a livingroom. My two kids, 16 and 19 slept on the sofa bed in the livingroom. It worked out well, but the european timeshares are not as nice as the one%26#39;s we own in Kauai. Marriot an Hanalei Bay. Maria alm gave us two hotel rooms instead of the one bedroom condo. The hotel was very nice. St. Johann looked nice too, it was we did not want to hear the consrtruction at 700am. good luck and keep us posted on your trip.
