My family %26amp; I will be in Vienna in late Feb early March 07 and would like to know best %26amp; closest East European cities to visit. Are they safe %26amp; good value $?
Also what are the MUST sees in Vienna %26amp; area. We will be there for 11 days.
Also my son is leaving soon to study in Vienna any last minute advice?

Go to Sofia, very safe, really interesting, and very very inexpensive.

If your son spends an extended time in Vienna, he should look to buy a momthly transport card good for unlimited ridership on all public transport in the city- bus- streetcar, u-bahn, ity train- a bargain at 45 euro per month.
or a Wochenkarte- weeks card good from Momday to Monday for 12,50 euro same usage as above.
If he looks to travel a little- he can aply for a student Vorteilscard- he pays a one time fee for the card and permits about 50% off on train tickets inside Austria-
Must sees in Vienna-
look to the tourist website
www.info.wien.at
Hofburg Palace-and Treasury
Schonbrunn Palace
Belvedere Palace ( Art )
Fine Arts Museum
Just a few places.
the website above gives good description of many sights worth seeing.
defintely an oprea or concert-- nice to take a guided tour of the Opera befoe attening a performance
Day trip - Melk Abbey
Wachau - Dürnstein - Krems-wine growing region
Bratislava.- 1 hour away
all reachable by train.
Eastern Europe - everyone has a different idea of what is Eastern Europe.
some even consider Bratislava in Eastern Europe.
Budapest - 2 1/2 hours by train - a nice visit
also many other places in Hungary - interesting and not expensive.

I was always taught that the Austro-Hungarian Empire was MITTEL Europe. To me (I have travelled a little bit around that part of the world) Eastern Europe begins at the Eastern Hungarian border (i.e. the Ukraine and Romania),

Vienna ,Praha and Budapest are Mittel Europe.Sofia ,Skopia,Beograd and Thessaloniki are Balkans.Warsaw,Kiev, Minsk etc are East Europe!!

I think most people would agree that part of the Balkans, such as Sarajevo, Sofia, Bucharest, are as much part of Eastern Europe as they are Balkan.
