First trip to Salzburg - Questions/Suggestions

We will be in Salzburg for 4 nights in March staying at the Hotel Weiss Taube. A few questions to get started:

1. Tranfer from the Airport to the Hotel. Best method - Taxi ? Bus? approx. cost ?

2. Salzburg Card - Is it a good value. Cost is 34 Euro. The Vienna Card which we used in our trip to Vienna last year was much less expensive.

3. Inexpensive places to eat and sugestions on Pubs.

Roley - Hope to hear from you. Your sugestions for Vienna were terrific.

Hey, great to hear you%26#39;re off to Salzburg! I hope you like the Weisse Taube. I had an enjoyable stay there (but if you don%26#39;t like the room, do ask to be changed, as they seem to be a bit uneven).

The transfer is easy by bus. It costs 1.70, I think, for a single ride, and there%26#39;s an automatic ticket machine next to the bus stop (exit the terminal and walk straight ahead out to the road and the bus stop is beyond the carpark). Tickets to be validated in the little boxes in the bus, as in Vienna. The airport bus no. 2 goes to the Hauptbahnhof, and there you can change to the 3, 5, 6 or 25 (same ticket valid) which will take you into town. Loads of room for luggage at the rear of the bus (easiest to get on the back door). The best stop for the Weisse Taube is the Mozartsteg, which is the second stop after you cross the river. It is just at the foot of the Kaigasse and a short walk up there to the hotel. For the return journey you will need to cross the river by the footbridge (Mozartsteg) to reach the stop on the other side (in high winds or the event of belting snow, might be worth catching a cab to the airport).

The Salzburg card is expensive because it actually covers the full entrance cost to virtually everything you%26#39;ll want to see and do eg. fortress, fortress railway, Hellbrunn, Monschberg lift up and down, assorted museums, tour of the festival hall, and (in good weather) boat trip on the river. It also works as a bus pass within the town limits. So it is actually pretty good value if you are going all-out for sightseeing - and it is very convenient because you just waltz in without having to buy separate tickets. Not sure if you can get it at the airport (perhaps someone else knows?) but if so it would cover your busride to town too!

There are quite a few threads on places to eat worth hunting out in the Salzburg forum here ... for personal favourites, I like Weisses Kreuz, quite close to the Weisse Taube, up towards the fortress. Tasty Balkan food, and good value. For pubs, I like zum Fidelen Affen on the other side of the river, on the Priesthausergasse off the Linzergasse, two or three blocks up from the river. Great food and beer on tap ... Sternbrau between the Getreidegasse and Griesgasse is also nice. My favourite (traditional-style) cafes are Habakuk, a little bit further up the Linzergasse but worth the walk, with mammoth cakes and great coffee, despite 1970s timewarp decor. I also like Cafe Niemetz, behind the Pferdeschwemme fountain at the end of the Hofstallgasse (just next to the tunnel entrance going under the Monschberg). Be sure to take away some of their Mozart Polsterl, delicious!

I would avoid the restaurants/pubs in the Kaigasse which struck me as very touristy with overpriced dull food.

There%26#39;s a Billa supermarket on the Griesgasse which is good for baked goods, filled rolls, fruit etc. The Weisse Taube is good as it has a minibar and also tea and coffeemaking facilities if you fancy a hot drink.

Hope that helps as a start!

Roley,

Thanks for the prompt response. The Airport transfer by Bus sounds easy.

We will be arriving in Salzburg on a Monday morning so there should be plenty of rooms to choose from if we don%26#39;t like the first one. I can even request a change in german (Konnen Sie mir ein anderes zimmer zeigen, bitte). Still taking german classes a work.

Salzburg card sounds good. They have a web page so we will check out what is offered.

We are going to Regensburg after Salzburg....Ever been there ?

Hope to see you again some time. We are planning a second trip to Vienna....maybe in the Fall.

Sounds great! I think Salzburg is fairly quiet in March - unless the snow which has failed to fall so far all dumps down then! - so you should see the town in peace, rather than when it is overrun with ravening tourists (Festival time, ack).

Never been to Regensburg or in fact anywhere in Germany (unless transitting to Austria), go figure! But I would like to see the Black Forest (and eat the cake!)

Vienna in the fall sounds fun. Not sure what my plans are for later this year ... I will get there in December but maybe not earlier.

Enjoy yourself in Salzburg! (I%26#39;m stuck in Oxford until Easter, grim)

If we buy the Salzburg card at the airport I would think that wopuld cover the Bus ticket into Salzburg ?

Also anyone tell me what the taxi cost from the airport to the Altstadt would be. Just would like to compare.

Thanks

Yes, the Salzburg card will cover your bus fare - it%26#39;s valid as a bus pass for the duration of the card.

A taxi to the old town would cost between 12-15 euros. The bus goes a bit round the houses so it will take you about 40 mins to reach the old town by bus, allowing for traffic and then changing at the Hauptbahnhof.

I always use public transport from the airport in Vienna but the distance is so short in Salzburg (the airport is minute, and only about 10-15 mins from town in light traffic) I sometimes splurge on a taxi!

Regarding the Salzburg card. I think it is available at the airport and it would cover bus fares into town. The person who sells it to you might write the time on it which means that it is then ticking down your 24 or 48 hours. Sometimes, if you buy the card at a hotel they don%26#39;t write it on so the time only starts ticking the first time you use it i.e. it is put into a machine (at the attraction you%26#39;re visiting). On the bus you don%26#39;t have to do anything with the card, just keep it handy to show it in case the inspector gets on (and they frequently do). Hope that makes sense :-)

Thanks Roley and Liz. Good advice and info. We will see how we feel after 7-8 hrs on the plane. We are a lot more comfortable with public transportation in Europe as we travel more and I know enough German to get by at train and bus stations.

Thanks again !!!!
