How is Maria Alm?

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone would recommend Maria Alm for a skiing holiday around Christmas time. My family is looking for a town with the traditional Austrian feel... Also wondering which hotels would be nicest to stay in. We%26#39;re ideally interested in family hotels with good food and a cozy, traditional decor. Advice would be very welcome!

Hi again,

Maria Alm is lovely - a pretty village (similar to Heiligenblut) but more central for other areas (Salzburg, Zell am See etc), much easier to get to and it connects with a great range of ski areas. I have a friend who organises ski packages %26quot;tailor made%26quot;, if you want I can give you his details for more information.

Hi Taf,

Wow, thanks again!

I%26#39;d be happy to receive the details of your friend who organizes tailor made ski packages. I guess above all we are looking for some really special family hotel in a pretty town in Austria. We%26#39;ve come for Christmas to Austria 3x before -- twice to Bad Kleinkircheim, in a really wonderful family hotel (it expanded and lost a little bit of its charm), and then another time to Alpbach. I guess the main thing is the traditional Austrian atmosphere/quality which we%26#39;re after. Skiing is a bonus, as we%26#39;re thinking of going to Lech anyway after Christmas. So if you think your friend might be helpful in organizing this aspect, please do pass on his details. Thanks so much again.

Hi Anna

--you can email Kit at info@austrianpremiumtours.com. He does mainly Gastein, but other areas too - Dorf Gastein is also a lovely village in winter - but there are lots of others, including Dienten %26amp; Maria Alm. Im sure he will be able to help. Good luck!

Hi Anna.

I lived in Saalfelden for about 14 years, which is 5kms form Maria Alm and can definitely recommend Maria Alm or Hintertal fo a skiing holiday with a tratidional Austrian feel to it.

Enjoy it

Can anyone compare Maria Alm with St. Johann im Pongau?

Thanks in advance,

Justin

Hello Anna

I second the opinion on Dorfgastein. We stayed at the beautiful hotel Hauserbauer this summer. Read my review of it in the review section. We have never been there in winter but are considering going. It looks as though the skiing would be great. We passed through Maria Alm last season and it looked very pretty but I have never been skiing there.

Hello,

We%26#39;ve only stayed at the Alpenland SportHotel in Maria Alm this past summer, but just for information%26#39;s sake, we found the hotel clean, modern, and the concierge and staff very helpful. The townspeople, too, were very friendly.

Once we figured out the bus schedule, which leaves just from the next block, we felt the whole Salzburg area had just opened up for us. And the views just around the block were extremely gorgeous!

Hope this helps some.

We are planning a trip to Maria Alm in October and the note about the bus interested me. Could someone explain more about the system and where it can go. We don%26#39;t really want to rent a car unless necessary.

I too would like more information about the bus you mentioned. I would like to able to go to Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Berchestgaden from Maria Alm. I have checked train schedules and it seems like it takes a very long time to get from Salzburg to Saalfelden, over 3 hours, and then one must still get from Saalfelden to Maria Alm. Am I missing something?
