Question for Roley

We are visiting Salzburg for 4 days (Sat until Tues) at the end o Feb. We have booked a room at the Cordial Theatre hotel. Can you tell us which bus (or buses) will drop us at or near the hotel. We are hoping for lots of snow by then, what are our chances? Do you recommend a SOM Tour and if so which one. Could we go into the mountains or into some local villages on local transport if we did not do a tour?.

According to my map, the Cordial Theater is on the Schallmooser Haupstrasse, which is the extension of the Linzergasse. It%26#39;s a bit tricky to reach by bus and requires much changing - I guess you%26#39;ll be coming in to Salzburg airport, where you can catch the bus no. 2 to the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof), and change there to a 1, 3, 5 or 6 going towards town (the Zentrum). If you alight at the Mirabellplatz, and then I think you have to cross the street and go a short distance up the Paris Lodron Strasse to the bus stop on the right hand side where you can catch bus no. 4 going to %26quot;Salzburg Langwied%26quot; which will take you to the Schallmooser Hstr (if you get off at the corner of Franz Josef Str %26amp; Schallmooser Hstr - near the hotel Hofwirt on the corner - the hotel is 2 blocks north of there).

Rather complicated if you don%26#39;t know the town so probably best to get a cab from the airport - that will probably cost about 12-15 euros.

The hotel is quite well placed for town, as all you have to do is march in a straight line down the Schallmooser HStr and the Linzergasse and you will reach the Salzach river - cross the bridge and you are in the old town (I guess 10 mins stroll). There are some nice restaurants and cafes and shops along the Linzergasse. Bus 4 will also take you into town, if you catch it coming down the Schallmooserhauptstrasse, it will go down to the Mirabellplatz, past the Landestheater, over the Stadtbrucke and down to the river quay where you can hop off for the old town. You can catch it back from the other side of the street, at the stop near the Billa supermarket.

No idea about snow as i always avoid the stuff - but going on the winter we%26#39;ve had so far I%26#39;d say your chances of snow at the end of Feb are better than now! Ordinarily I would expect it to be really cold and snowy around then.

I%26#39;ve not done any of the tours so best to have a look at the other recommendations made in this forum by people who have personal experience. The trip up the Untersberg mountain is a good alternative - you can reach it on bus 25 from the city centre, and if you have the Salzburg car, the cablecar ascent is free. Have a look at some recent posts where people provide information about that trip. It is probably the easiest way to get a taste of the mountains. You might combine it with a trip to Hellbrunn palace, gardens and zoo which is also on the bus 25 route, closer to town.

Hope that helps as a starting point!

Do you know if the no.2 bus stops anywhere near the Sheraton hotel? If it only stops at the station do you know how far to walk from there?

many thanks

The no. 2 bus doesn%26#39;t go past the Sheraton, and though you could walk it from the station (about 10-15 mins) it%26#39;s really too far to be schlepping luggage etc.

If you don%26#39;t want to take a taxi for the whole journey from the airport, the best idea would be to take the no. 2 bus to the rail station and then change onto another bus that will take you close by the Sheraton. Your ticket for the airport-station journey is valid for your onward journey too as transfers are allowed, so no need to buy a second ticket.

To reach the Sheraton, at the station you can take the following buses:

No. 1 going to EM Stadion/Europark

No. 3 going to Salzburg Sud

No. 5 going to Birkensiedlung

No. 6 going to Parsch

Note that if you have a ticket you can board the bus at any door - there are buttons on the outside of the bus that open the doors for boarding passengers.

Right at the end of most buses there is an open area which people use for bikes, humungo strollers, and large suitcases so I often get on at the rearmost door with my luggage and stand there.

Hope that helps!

I forgot to say, the bus stop you want on any of the buses 1, 3, 5 or 6 is the Kongresshaus, which is close by the Sheraton (I think it is right behind the actual Kongresshaus). That is the second stop after leaving the rail station. In most buses there is an LDC display above the gangway which tells you which bus stop is coming up so you know when to press the bell. It%26#39;s often announced by a recording too. So unlike using bus services in England where the passengers are magically supposed to know what their stop looks like when they reach it!

Thank you so much for that Roley.

Just to update Roley previous post it seems some bus routes have been changed and the Airport Bus (No 2) now extends past the Train Station and runs on Sterneckstrasse which runs parallel passes to Schallmooser Haupstrasse so it is pretty easy to get to now. Get off at the Bayerhamerstrasse stop, walk around 50 yards back and turn left down Bayerhamerstrasse itself – the Cordial Theater is on the right at bottom. Its about a 5/10 min walk.

The No.4 bus goes on Schallmooser Haupstrasse though although the Cordial Theater is situated pretty in the middle of the Hofwirth (before) and Grillparzerstrasse (after) stops. If you wanted to go on this bus you would need to change – my suggestion would be change at Aigilhof/LKH West. Take the #2 from the Airport, get of at Aigilhof/LKH West, just after the bus has turned left at the traffic lights. On the opposite side of the road, slightly to the right, outside a restaurant is another stop. Cross over and catch the #4 going into town that way – this will then go through Salzburg and go on Schallmooser Haupstrasse.

The latest City Guide from Salzburg.info seems to have the new bus routes on.
